Kale in smoothies

Hi everyone!!

I just bought a huge bag of Kale and I really hope we can use it up before it

goes bad. (I've never used it before)

Please help me with a yummy smoothie recipe? This is what I have on hand to go

with it:

bananas, oranges, strawberries, mix berries, pineapple, blueberries, lime and

lemon juice.

Any ideas?

Hello Shaun,Be sure to de-stem the Kale and I wouldn't go overboard. It can be much stronger (more bitter) than spinach. I like to use fewer fruits so I can taste their flavors. If you like the taste of banana, I'd be SURE to put it in because it is the sweetest and will help balance any bitter in the Kale. Here are some combos that I would like:orange/bananastrawberry/bananapineapple/blueberrymixed berries/bananaorange/pineapplelime/lemon (would need a sweetener)

But really there is almost an endless combination and that is why Green Smoothies are so neat! You could have a different Green Smoothie every day for years I'd bet before running out of combinations…

As to the kale you can cut it to the size you want and freeze until use.

I make salad from fresh kale ( massaged kale salad) I sauté onion and garlic and add kale then some chicken broth and cook until tender. Yum.I also use kale In smoothies.I love kale even though I am married to an Okie, I never even tried it until a few years ago yet now I am in love with it.As long as you are not planning to make a fresh salad with it you can freeze it just fine.VeldaSent from Velda's iPadOn Oct 4, 2011, at 8:12 PM, Shaunsanto@... wrote:

That’s exactly how I did it. I also add a can of Cannellini beans. I’m sure any other bean might work as well.

I adore kale and love flat leaf kale if I can get it, a farmer's market has a grower of the flat leaf, has a different flavor and grown organically. My canaries love it, looks like they have green lipstick on their beaks after eating the kale. I think it's a super healthy plant. I'm getting more and more concerened on using organic as much as possible with all the news about pesticides.

I've cooked kale with collard greens also...awesome with some bacon fat, sugar and vinegar. mmmmmm takes me back to my childhood in the mountains of Tennessee

I buy a different kind of green to have with dinner each night during the week. But, I reserve a small amount of each green to combine in a casserole on Friday. I dice onion & mince garlic. Saute both in olive oil in a big frying pan. Add some chicken broth to finish by steaming. Add a can of Cannellini Beans. Then I dump everything into a casserole dish. Push flavored croutons into the greens & a small amount of chicken broth. Sprinkle with Grated Cheese. Bake in a 350 oven for about 1/2 hour to heat through. My husband loves this. We even eat left overs for a snack. LOL

No fat, no cholesterol, loaded with vitamins & minerals. Perfect meal.

Do you want only kale smoothie recipes? I make 'kale chips' by just tossing

whole leaves with a little oil, salt/pepper and roastng in a hot oven. My kids

will eat them til they turn green!

If you are a raw-only person, there are also recipes for grinding and

dehydrating, I think, to make more of a tortilla chip kindof thing...Seems

someone mentioned a recipe for that on this list once.

I know there are recipes for my whole leaf chips at allrecipes but I'm sure you

can find plenty by googling.

Raw chips are easy to make by just buzzing up your greens or whatever veg/fruit you want to use into a thick puree in the VM, then running them through a cookie press with a cheese straw attachment (or a jerky gun) right on to your dehydrator sheet. I find raw sweet potato and pumpkin chips to be too chewy if I just slice and dehydrate, but buzzing them in the VM first makes a nice crunchy chip. You’re quite welcome. It was the way I got my husband to try different greens. He’ll eat them all now.

Cabbage, kale, beet greens, mustard greens, collards,spinach, escarole, etc.

Hello Jeff,Good for you for taking baby steps! Hang out here and you will get inspired to keep on taking those baby steps and pretty soon, you'll be eating fewer late night snacks and fewer "semi-bad" dinners :-)About the Kale - in my experience, the stems are more bitter than the leaves, and I don't think we need THAT much extra fiber :-) I prefer to de-stem my kale.

Speaking of kale, I have been enjoying a lot of green smoothies using spinach,

but when I have occasionally switched to kale I find it makes me very gassy!

And I did take off the stems - anyone else have a similar problem and have any

suggestions? I really want to mix up my greens. I currently have collard

greens in the fridge but haven't tried them in a smoothie yet....
