I wouldn't worry too much about the calories if this were a meal. And the fat in it

will keep whoever's drinking it feeling full for quite a while. :)

I have two men in the house who are extremely active and need lots of calories to keep going. I experimented today, and ended up making them a smoothie that was delicious! I usually just do fruit, veggies, and water in mine, but this one was sooooo good, I couldn't resist having some myself. It was so creamy, everyone was convinced it was mostly ice cream!

But like I said, it's pretty high in calories. I haven't tried, but I imagine it wouldn't be hard to make it much more diet friendly, though. Use skim milk or water, lower cal protein powder, fat free yogurt... not sure if any of that would affect the consistency, but it should be a winner no matter what you end up doing.

Even if you have it as is, I think it would still be much better for you than a milkshake or something, and still felt just as sinful!

1 frozen banana

1 scoop Pure Protein 100% Whey Protein Powder (vanilla cream)

About 1/3 cup milk

About 1/2 cup yogurt

About 2 cups frozen mixed fruit (peaches, mangoes, pineapple, strawberries)

6 or 7 fresh strawberries with leaves

2 large handfuls baby spinach

Blend until thick and creamy.

Yeah, I only had a cup and I think I'll be skipping dinner tonight. But it was

totally worth it!

I realize that a lot of folks overdo it but fat is an essential part of our diet, including a little bit of saturated fat. And because it's such a concentrated food, even a little really goes a long way toward helping dieters to feel satisfied. Feeling hungry all the time has to be self-defeating for someone watching his weight.

Hi, I'm glad to see that you can add protein powder without spoiling the flavor of the smoothie. I tried going on a smoothie fast a couple days ago and by halfway into day two and 5 smoothies later (I mean 5 near blenderfuls) the gnawing hunger was driving me mad. I concluded that I need more calories in my smoothie or I won't be able to do this. But I want to get the goodness of these fruits and vegetables and train myself to enjoy the flavors and really appreciate them.Anyway, today I added a teaspoon of olive oil to my smoothie and that seemed to help. I think tomorrow I will also add some flaxseed. Can anyone recommend a great protein powder that won't interfere with the flavor? Right now I'm not adding yogurt to mine so I don't know if that will make a difference. Thanks,On Jul 13, 2011, at 5:19 PM, S. wrote:

A number of members like to use coconut oil as an add-in and I'll bet it would taste

better than olive oil in a fruit smoothie.

When Lea Ann's able to respond maybe she'll weigh in on Whole Nectar--a lot of the demonstrators sell it (except the ones I've encountered, grrr....).

I second the coconut oil suggestion. That would probably be a much better

choice.

As far as the protein powder, this is what I used:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pure-Protein-100-Whey-Protein-Powder-Vanilla-Cream-32-\

oz/16536988

I'm not sure if that's a good choice (probably not), but they like it, so...

It didn't hide or overpower the flavors of the fruit at all, but it did mellow

them out a little and added a bit of vanilla flavor. That's partly what made it

seem so much like a milkshake. (I think you could just add more fruit if the

flavor wasn't strong enough.)

I expected it to taste and feel chalky or gritty, but it didn't at all. It was

very smooth and creamy.

And it did keep me full for a very long time, which usually doesn't happen. I

haven't noticed any ill effects, either. I'm pretty sure I will be making this

one again as a meal replacement in the near future.

, If you have or can get some coconut oil, I think you would find it better than olive oil in the smoothie. Contrary to what you've heard the past several years, coconut oil is one of the healthiest you can eat. It is so yummy that I often eat it right off the spoon! In order to get it to emulsify so you don't have big globs of oil in your smoothie, whirl the C.O. with your liquid of choice first - do it on high until there's no oil globs (C.O. is liquid at about 76 degrees and above, and solid below that temp). Then add your greens, fruits, whatever. It has a slight coconut flavor, but certainly not overpowering. I love Dr. Ben Kim's Coconut Oil - Premium Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil obtained by centrifuge separation from fresh coconut milk. A product of Indonesia. www.drbenkim.com Others on this list have their favorites, too. Just be sure to keep it in a dark place - Dr. Kim's comes in a clear glass jar but has a corrugated cardboard sleeve over it that I keep in place all the time. Also, investigate the super-foods like maca, goji berries, cacao, etc. Wolfe has a great book "Superfoods" the food and medicine of the future. You might be able to find it at the library. HTH! And congratulations for your efforts to improve your nutrition! Every little bit helps... Peggy
