Thank You so much for this message,When I was a young child we had apricot trees in our yard and we loved to sit in the trees and eat ripe Apricots and we were warned "DO NOT EAT THE "the almond" IN THE CENTER OF THE PIT. IT IS POISON. as I am writing this I am listening to the video that you included so very interesting I am sending to my neice who has been fighting cancer for years.Thank You Marie

Hello everyone!

I want to create a page on my website where I list the skins, seeds, leaves, and stems that people can eat and which ones they should toss (I get this question a LOT).I've composed a reply - but would like to see what I've missed (if anything). Your input is appreciated…

The "rule of thumb" I used when deciding whether to use a skin, stem, seed or leaf in the Vitamix is to bite into it (or chew some of it) and if it tastes bad (bitter), I don't put it in. You can rest assured that the Vitamix will increase the flavor of the foods you put in so a bad flavor will be intensified when it is blended.

Another "rule of thumb" - "pits are the pits" (in other words - no pits). Avocado is an exception - some people eat avocado seeds…http://www.vitamix.com/household/infocenter/3horsepower.asp

Pomegranate and Papaya seeds are bitter.

Kiwi and fuzzy peaches - personal call.

Avocado Mango skins - no

Cantaloupe, Pineapple skins - no

Banan skins - BITTER!

Strawberry leaves - wash 'em good and toss 'em in (high in minerals, fiber, and Vitamin K)

Seeds and skins of tomato - use them!

Stems and seeds of sweet pepper - put it in!

Stems, and leaves of tomatoes - very bitter, leave 'em out.

Watermelon, Honeydew skins - it's up to your taste. Watermelon Rind is a tad bitter, but it is a POWERFUL diuretic. BTW, Watermelon SHOULD be eaten on an empty stomach. A great time to take it, is first thing in the morning. It only takes half an hour to exit your stomach and then you can move on to other things. While on the topic of watermelon, here is a post I made to the Vitamix Enthusiasts email list recently… /message/13669

Cantaloupe seeds are great for you, as well as all melon seeds - high in protein!

Berries of all kinds have tough seeds and they are excellent as a cancer preventative http://www.google.com/search?client=safari & rls=en & q=berry+seeds+cancer & ie=UTF-8 & oe=UTF-8 (and only a Vitamix can burst open berry seeds)

/message/13927

You might eventually come across information about cyanide in apple seeds. Here is my reply to that:

(especially watch from 26-30 minutes).

I always include the kernels (shelled, of course) when I use apricots. Like apple seeds, they're not harmful when used with their fruit as stated by the narrator and it's nice to hear verified what I've posted on the list at least once; it was also nice to see the "lock and key model" of enzymes demonstrated; perhaps if watched by enough viewers it will in small part put paid to the idiotic "Cult of the Living Enzyme," the current prevalence of which drives me batsh*t...but I somehow doubt it. :(

Nutcracker and you're right, they ARE hard--I was shocked. The upside is that I've managed never to crush the kernel despite the effort involved in cracking the shell.

I always ate the "almond" kernel in the peach pit. The worst thing that ever happened is when I told my dad and he said that a peach tree was going to grow in my stomach and the branches would come out my ears. I spent the best part of a whole day nearly sick to my stomach at the very thought of it! Until my mom heard about it, scolded Dad, and told me the truth of the matter.

Apropos of nothing, and WAY OT here...did you ever take a drink of milk while you still had some raw carrot in your mouth? Like maybe washing down the carrot? It tastes so much like an almond! Just thought I'd share.

Did not know that...

Always wondered though...if a cow laughs, does milk come out of her

nose?

Half of what I know today will be obsolete in five years--I'd just

like to know which half

Show them who's boss! Press on the nutcracker slowly and hard until you get the hang of it--they're not like any nuts you've crushed.

I freeze my apricots for smoothies (single layer in freezer bag, frozen flat) so I halve them and then reintroduce each kernel into a half before freezing. I only use one kernel/whole apricot, not because I'm apprehensive about cyanide but because I want to make them last. :) They have a nice, almond flavor; I believe almond extract is made from them rather than almonds.

I do the same thing with peaches and nectarines but I don't buy them as often. I'm all about B17!

Now THAT'S interesting. Norman , a big one for carrot juice, suggested mixing it with a little cream for those who find it unpalatable (clearly these are folks without access to Bunny-Luv organic juice carrots). I wonder if he picked up on the almond flavor?

You and me both all about B17. Just wish that girl at work would have listened, she gave back the book. They say she can only hope for two months at the most and that's only because Chemo is keeping her going but miserable. Who knows , maybe a miracle will happen..

Me too.

I remember not cleaning my ears so the watermelon would have some

here...did you ever take a drink of milk

while you still had some raw carrot in

your mouth? Like maybe washing down the

carrot? It tastes so much like an almond!

Just thought I'd share.

People go into remission and often there are no good explanations for why. One can only keep her in his/her prayers and hope.

You and me both all about B17. Just wish that girl at work would have listened, she gave back the book. They say she can only hope for two months at the most and that's only because Chemo is keeping her going but miserable. Who knows , maybe a miracle will happen..

Nutcracker and you're right, they ARE hard--I was shocked. The upside is that I've managed never to crush the kernel despite the effort involved in cracking the shell.

How do you get the shells off, they are hard.

Thank You so much for this message,When I was a young child we had apricot trees in our yard and we loved to sit in the trees and eat ripe Apricots and we were warned "DO NOT EAT THE "the almond" IN THE CENTER OF THE PIT. IT IS POISON. as I am writing this I am listening to the video that you included so very interesting I am sending to my neice who has been fighting cancer for years.

Hello everyone!

I want to create a page on my website where I list the skins, seeds, leaves, and stems that people can eat and which ones they should toss (I get this question a LOT).

I've composed a reply - but would like to see what I've missed (if anything).

Avocado is an exception - some people eat avocado seeds…

http://www.vitamix.com/household/infocenter/3horsepower.asp

You might eventually come across information about cyanide in apple seeds. Here is my reply to that:

(especially watch from 26-30 minutes).

We use apricot kernels and peach kernals in Chinese medicine. Sparingly since

they are slightly toxic. Good for constipation.

Tao Ren Properties: BITTER, SWEET - NEUTRAL Dosage: 4.5 – 9g.

Peach Seed Meridian: HEART, LARGE INTESTINE, LIVER, LUNG

-invigorate blood, remove stasis

-abscess of large intestine & lung

-moisten intestines, unblock bowels

Xing Ren Properties: BITTER - WARM/TOXIC

Dosage:3 – 9g.

Apricot Seed Meridian: LARGE INTESTINE, LUNG

-stop cough and calm wheezing due to hot or cold

-moistens intestines, unblocks bowels

-use bitter seeds (from north) not sweet seeds (from south)

Also Used For:

Orally, small amounts of toxic kernel constituent, hydrocyanic acid, a source of

HCN is used orally for asthma, cough, and constipation.

Folk medicine, apricot is used orally for hemorrhage, infertility, eye

inflammation, spasm, and vaginal infections.

Historically, laetrile, the semi-synthetic derivative of amygdalin constituent,

has been fraudulently acclaimed as a cancer treatment.

In manufacturing, apricot oil is used in cosmetics or as a vehicle for

pharmaceutical preparations.
