Guest guest
My teen daughter (age 16) has been vegetarian most of her life , and I put a hefty spoonful of chia, almonds or other nuts, and some cooked red organic quinoa (a complete protein on its own) in her smoothies. I don't worry about amounts, since I know she gets plenty of protein in her diet anyway. There is a LOT of hype and misinformation about vegetarians not getting enough protein-most of the misinformation having been put out by the meat industry. If my daughter is exceptionally active one day, I may boost her protein a little. Otherwise, it all equals itself out anyway. I am not a fan of protein powders or supplement, so I just try to make sure to keep a decent balance in her daily foods and drinks. She loves "protein" bars made with my leftover pulps from juicing and grain milks. I also sometimes add a spoonful of cooked white beans to her smoothies, soups and even ice cream-it tastes great, adds a nice silky texture, and there is no taste of the beans. I have to limit my protein quite dramatically due to kidney issues, so I make things differently for her than I do for myself, but I never worry about her getting enough protein. Guest guest
Interesting comment on the cooked quinoa in smoothies.....how does that effect flavor, texture, etc????I would rather put quinoa in smoothies vs protein powder! What about uncooked quinoa (just rinsed) or sprouted quinoa? Guest guest
I sometimes use sprouted quinoa, but I always cook extra and keep it in a jar in the fridge. I add a tablespoon or two, I guess-I don't measure. It adds a mild nuttiness to it and some texture and body. We use red quinoa-I find it much milder than the tan. From: Leanne T <ljsrtcan@...> Subject: OT - Chia Seeds & Hemp Hearts Date: Sunday, March 27, 2011, 3:29 PM Hi, since we are the Queens and Kings of OT I was hoping to get some info on chia and hemp. Guest guest
You mentioned white beans. I have a bean question. I like the taste of the canned Cannellini beans (aka white kidney beans) but have never seen them in dried bean form. Any clue where I might find them because none of my local stores seem to have them dry. I would like to store on shelf as dry for use in soups and such (so I can cook them without all the salt cans usually contain). Guest guest
I buy ALL of my organic grains in bulk. When I first went gluten/allergy free, there were not many recipes out there, and it was crazy expensive to buy gluten free grains and attempt recipes that very well might fail. I wanted to be able to play with recipes without having to mortgage my house! Started buying in bulk and was able to master many recipes through trial and error, and it just makes better sense. I was paying some ridiculous price for a few ounces of rice flour, which tasted rancid anyway! Now, I can buzz up loads of it in the Vitamix without having to worry about breaking the bank. I have acquired more freezers to accommodate them, but it is well worth it! Guest guest
I vac seal 5 pound bags, then store in the freezer. I also both whole grain and ground flour in 1/2 gallon mason jars in my cabinets for "on-the-go" use, which I go through every couple of days, then just refill. I order mine through a friend in the restaurant business-he orders for me to bulk up his minimum order, so he lets me have it at his cost. If you know anyone in the business, ask if they will do the same. If you DON'T know anyone, barge in to a restaurant and ASK them-make friends! This is what I did with the guy I buy from-didn't know him from Adam, but went in and pleaded my case to him, and we have been fast friends for many years now. I pay about 1/3 of what the grains cost retail! Guest guest
You should be able to find a great variety of white beans at any whole foods or health food store that carries items in the bulk bins. I grow my own beans, and dry them myself for long term storage, but I have seen them in many stores, many varieties. I grow about 10 varieties in the summer, and dry or freeze them for use during the winter. I am just using up the last of my cranberry beans from last season-they are my all time fave! Guest guest
Don't feel bad, Kim! I was born and raised in London, England, and gardening was NOT part of my childhood. When I first decided to try growing my own veggies, I carefully plotted out my garden, with the intention of growing in stages so I would have a continuous harvest. I made nifty little signs and grafts, and my ex hubby (an avid gardener) came over to inspect my handy work. He stood there and scratched his head, wondering why I had used only one little square in my square foot garden. I explained that I was intending to grow one "bunch" of things at a time. He scratched his head some more, then it hit him! He asked how many seeds of each I had planted. I told him ONE radish seed, ONE beet seed, ONE lettuce seed, ONE green onion seed, etc-with the intention to do the same the following week for a later harvest. He busted out laughing when he realized I truly believed ONE seed would give me a BUNCH like they come in the grocery store!! I guess I thought they would shoot up out of the ground, rubber band and all, lol. Thank goodness I have come a LONGGGGGGGGGG way since then! Hey, we all have to start somewhere, and at least we are open MINDED to learning new things! From: Berry <berrywell@...>Subject: Re: OT - Chia Seeds & Hemp Hearts Date: Monday, March 28, 2011, 8:16 AM You should be able to find a great variety of white beans at any whole foods or health food store that carries items in the bulk bins. Guest guest
Do you mail order on your own, or are you with a co-op, or ??? Long ago I was with a group of gals who did group orders from a place up in the foothills here in northern Ca, then one day when I was getting my order list ready, they called and said a relative of theirs wanted to join and so they were dropping me. Boo hiss. So my sources now are mainly the local health food store. Or finding a online place that I don't have to morgage my house for to pay shipping. My teenage daughter has been vegetarian for four years now and I've always tried to get omega's into her diet. She likes the chia and hemp in her smoothies but I'm so confused as to how much she needs. I've tried searching and there is so, so much information out there and some of it contradicts the other. Does anyone have any good reliable information on this ? Thanking you in advance. Leanne
Guest guest
Ha Ha, I read and answered your previous message, without reading this first. In other words, you answered before I sent (the previous). Thanks will think about that. Guest guest
You grow 10 varieties of white beans? Where do you live, I want to apprentice! haha Velda On 3/28/2011 6:16 AM, Berry wrote: You should be able to find a great variety of white beans at any whole foods or health food store that carries items in the bulk bins. I grow my own beans, and dry them myself for long term storage, but I have seen them in many stores, many varieties. I grow about 10 varieties in the summer, and dry or freeze them for use during the winter. I am just using up the last of my cranberry beans from last season-they are my all time fave! From: Leanne T <ljsrtcan@...> Subject: OT - Chia Seeds & Hemp Hearts Date: Sunday, March 27, 2011, 3:29 PM  Hi, since we are the Queens and Kings of OT I was hoping to get some info on chia and hemp.
