Guest guest
Yes. We really need to stay primarily focused on the " good " . But the guy is outrageous and he IS a presence (although , I personally think his influence is waning and there aren't legions of young MDs looking to fill his shoes) So ,we need to be doing something to contribute to or support the " quackwatchwatchers " . WAY too many people, educational institutions, businesses etc. Take his websites (quackwatch and chirobase among many others) as bastions of " fair and balanced " information. True story: About 5 years ago the McMinnville Public public library first rolled out a 'alternative medicine' health education page re. so-called " CAM " ...It listed links to various things about chiropractic, naturopathy, acupuncture etc. Many of the links were to government pages (like NIH 'CAM " division etc). But, near the bottom of the page was listed the " Criticisms of CAM " links. They were very prominently listed (in bold, I kid you not) links to " quackwatch " , Chirobase and one other barrett site. I showed my wife this page. My wife is a reference librarian and knows all about public library information validation criteria that professional librarians are supposed to be using. And it turned out this libary information page did not meet the ALA criteria for validity. I decided to take a few minutes and give them a call. I got a hold of the " librarian " who put the page up. Turns out, she was not even a librarian with an MLS degree. She told me she wasn;t really and expert (no kidding) and so she just copied another list of " CAM " links verbatim from another website. She directed me to this website that was written by a librarian-consultant. It turns out that because this librarian-consultant-writer was a nationally-published librarian re. healthcare information, her website was used as a template by many libraries all around the USA. I exchanged a few emails with her and made a strong and convincing argument that chirobase and quackwatch were NOT legitimate and valid authorities (despite their number of hits). My wife gave me a few tips re. ALA criteria. Well, I thimk I pursuaded her, because at some point, she updated that site and no longer referenced quackwatch and chirobase. Also, McMinnville library updated their page and there was no chirobase nor quackwatch anymore. So, ya see, we have got to really do both. In this situation, if I had merely pointed out the positives with so-called " CAM " , it would not have had the same result since they already had a some positive CAM stuff up. BTW, I am not in disagreement with Barrett about alot of things. I personally am very disappointed with much of the nonsense that passes itself off as CAM. And in fact I continually tell our patients that at our office we do NOT practice " Alternative medicine " . I say that we are an " alternative " to " CAM " . I teach them my belief that most of " CAM " in this nation is just another version of " allopathic " medicine utilizing more " natural " substances in lieu of the deeper need for necessary health behavior changes that are needed for true healing. Guest guest
Barrett is rabid that I am convinced of. Pointing out his mis-guidance is fine but to go on the attack of the entire medical profession is folly. sharron fuchs dc From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of spbkchiro97132Sent: Thursday, November 16, 2006 1:46 PM Subject: A Quackwatch story Yes.
