Dang, good ole lawmakers. Do you know anyone that owns a bar? How far are

you from the DE or NJ borders. NY, MD or WVA even, PA borders all of them.

Just a few thoughts. Wish I could help.

Hi Christy:

The tinctures should be fine, the alcohol acts as a preservative...but be

sure to store them in dark glass bottles.

Yep...a few years ago I tried to make liqueurs with it....two words come to

mind: " Rocket Fuel " !! :-Þ

Hi Melody:

Think of " proofage " ....Proof is double the content of alcohol in a product.

A 100-proof vodka is only 50% alcohol, the rest is water. Everclear,

depending on where you live can be 190 proof, which is 95% grain alcohol.

It is the alcohol that emulsifies the essential or fragrance oils added to

it...the more alcohol, the less of a chance of it turning cloudy or

separating.

This is not to say that no water can be added, but it must be added after

the oils have been dissolved in the alcohol, and then very gradually.

Unfortunately I know that it is drinkable. I doesn't taste too good. And I

don't suggest trying it. ***Oh the headache*** But, from what I learning

here my next exp with it may be much better...perfumes/colognes!!

>well then where does one buy everclear if it's against the law to sell like my

state?

You cannot buy it in Massachusetts either. But it is legal in NH and I live

about 45 minutes from the border. So I called up and ordered a case---they

asked me why I wanted it; they also had had some deaths where college students

hollowed out a watermelon and mushed it up with everclear and drank it---yuk.

When I explained, there was no problem. I went up and picked up the case from

the state store. I am no drinker---not morally opposed but my body is

physically opposed. If I have more than one weak drink of hard liquor, I

usually fall asleep and wake up with an incredible hangover. Nausea, vomiting,

migraine---the whole trip---as if I had been out all night drinking, when all I

had was one drink. But I couldn't resist tongue testing the Everclear. I can't

say it has a taste as much as an effect---sort of as if you drank lighter fluid.

I gather from the NH state store manager that, outside of the folks who ingest

the stuff direct, the major use is in crafts, toiletries and making liqueurs.

I have relatives in parts of this country that would beg to differ with you

on the undrinkable part.

Having tried during a visit, I would call it an acquired taste.

Either travel to a neighboring state that does sell it or resign yourself to

buying a high proof vodka or the special denatured alcohol.

On the special denatured alcohol, it is a specialty item and you have to find

a place that carries it.

You can only buy so much per year without having to pay for a very expensive

license.

I think the info on where to get it might be in the archives.

oops, wish I'd known that before I had those Ninfarita's.

Hahahaha, lots of restaurants in Houston use everclear in their

margaritas. I guess it's more palatable with lime juice and

tequila!

not that I would RECOMMEND drinking it, having indulged myself

with consequences...

Vodka is refined by aging and filtering through charcoal. This removes the

" fusel oils " that give Everclear it's nasty burn (although some cheaper

quality vodkas forgo this step).

I have noticed that Everclear gives off a definite alchol smell until it

evaporates that can throw off the more delicate perfume oils.

Here's what I do: pack a paper coffee filter with activated aquarium

charcoal (the kind used for aquariums and the like), and slowly pour the

alcohol through this. Let it settle and decant off the alcohol from any

sediment. This may have to be repeated a second or even a third time to

remove any remaining odor.

Once you have your odorless alcohol, you can add fixatives to help the

scents added to last longer:

1 gram benzoin resin

1 gram balsam tolu

1/2 gram frankincense resin

1 liter grain or denatured alcohol or strong vodka

Mix and steep 1 month; filter.

Glycerine can also be used as a fixative, use 2 tsp. per 8 oz. alcohol.

To make the perfume, dilute your fragrance oil as follows:

For a perfume (the strongest concentration of scent), use 1 part scent blend

to 4 parts perfume base.

For eau-de-toilette, use 1 part scent with 6 parts base.

For cologne, use 1 part scent to 8 parts base

For splashes or eau fraiche, use 1 part scent to 10 parts base.

Once the oils are dissolved in the alcohol, dilute with distilled water

(omit this step if using vodka as the alcohol):

Perfume: use undiluted

Eau de Toilette: 1 part alcohol-f.o./1/4 part distilled water

Cologne: 1 part alcohol-f.o./1/2 part distilled water

Splash: 1 part alcohol-f.o./1 part distilled water

Add the water to the blended alcohol/fragrance very slowly (almost drop by

drop) to avoid clouding or separation.

Jello shots with Everclear ?? I've never heard

of such a thing.....but I am glad someone

mentioned it......kids can think of some weird

things when it comes to alcohol.

I have a niece that died from alcohol poisoning......

Always watch what your children are doing

but that is almost impossible isn't it?

I was a Resident Assistant in college. This is a very troublesome shot.

Partly b/c it tastes so *good* and it feels sorta innocent...ya know like

eating Jell-O. Unfortunately, it is not so good/innocent! And I am so

sorry to hear about your niece. Christi in Dallas

Tell him to order it first. NH only has state run

liquor stores (interesting concept, that) and they

don't carry it on the shelf but they will order (a

case only) for you. And you have to tell them what

you want it for. It's also $17 a liter. I used to

use it for room sprays, now I reserve it strictly

for my herbal tinctures. I now use 100 proof

vodka, straight up. If you are mixing 50%

alcohol, and 50% water, I see no difference in

using something that is 50% water to start with.

Lynne: I wouldn't touch that statement with a ten foot

pole. You gotta be pretty brave? to try that stuff.

Even if it is " drinkable " , I'm pretty sure it will mess

with your head. Guess it depends on your constitution,

and mine sure can't handle it.LOLOLOL

I was just telling my husband about the Everclear discussion on this list.

He's in the reserves, and said that they sell it at the package store on

base.. so if any of you are military, you might want to check there..

Because I know it wouldn't be legal to sell at the state liquor stores in my

state..

Hollie,

It was my first and last time trying Everclear.

My mom and I were visiting relatives we had not seen since I was a babe in

her arms.

I fared a tad better than my mom did is about all I can say.

I live in MA. Here it is illegal to purchase thanks to a former first lady

who liked to drink it. But if I really want to purchase I cross the border

into Rhode Island. Most times I use Absolute Vodka when I have a recipe

that calls for Everclear.

Yes it is legal in Connecticut that is where I got mine. If they don't have it

on the self you will have to ask for it.
