Pure Ethyl alcohol is the > best, but you can hardly find it for sale to the general public. Filtering the Everclear helps remove the fusel oils that give it that harsh " bite " . A cheaper method yet is to pack a paper coffee filter with activated aquarium charcoal and place in a plastic funnel. Position the funnel over a glass container that will hold the amount you are filtering, and slowly pour the alcohol through this. Repeat 2 or 3 more times, and let the liquid settle. Finally, decant or pour off the clear alcohol , leaving any sediment behind and rebottle. At this time, you can also add your scent fixatives like glycerine, benzoin, tolu or frankincense resins. Fixatives extend the life a perfume by reducing the evaporation rate of the alcohol and/or essential oils. These are usually used at a rate of 1% or so. Hope this helps! :-) Cat
Guest guest
, it's Everclear that is illegal to purchase in NYS. Pure alcohol...that's why you substitute Vodka. btw, the Raspberry is kind of nice... , your petals are very pretty. I dry mine on a cake cooling rack. They are a pain to do but they sell well. Just wish they dried faster. Jeanine
Guest guest
: Dang, grain alcohol is illegal in NYS too? I thought Pa was the only state in the Northeast that was too protective. I asked a local package store why I couldn't get it and was told that college students hurt themselves with it and to get ANY I'd need a permit. I wanted to make a tincture with it but as tinctures are made to be consumable, Everclear/grain alcohol is really too strong, not to mention much more expensive than cheapo vodka. Why pay twice as much for a pint when you need to dilute it? Just buy 100 proof Vodka. You can get it in Jersey, Deleware and probably Mass if you really need it. I have a pint that I'll probably never use..lol. I was told recently that a great use for it is unfreezing your well pump as you wouldn't want to use something that you couldn't drink. Use it sparingly though as it might rot the seals in your pump! A plumber I know also told me he uses it to clean sloder joints I think. Bob > , it's Everclear that is illegal to purchase in NYS.
