Thanks for sharing.

This brings to mind years ago when I worked in an institution and one of the

co-workers was a gentleman who was placed there because he had seizures. No

other reasons. Years later he was released, but by then he had no social

skills to survive so he stayed on as a worker. What a wasted life.

We have our company from Wisconsin visiting us. For those of you who are

new, .. we used to have a group home in Wisconsin and then we moved to Arizona,

20 years ago. was placed in a nursing home when she was a child. She is

now 56 years old. Her brother lives about an hour from the group home and

will have nothing to do with her. is 47. He was placed in an institution

when he was 6. We brought him out and into the group home when he was 22

against his parents wishes..but the state had custody. They lived in the same

town but didn't have anything to do with him. They both have down syndrome.

When we moved it was very difficult to leave them and we promised they could

come and visit with us. This is their 20th year spending Christmas with us in

Arizona! Our holidays begin when they arrive! They will go home on the 31st.

They are awesome!!

I

can't tell you how many times I hear people say " if only we all lived in

And I think looking at " Their world " is what pushes and I to advocate

for as much as we can for Maverick. and both have so much

potential and have grown just in the time we have known them and placed higher

expectations on them, but, WOW if we had been able to work with them when they

were

young and their minds still like sponges. As it is now, they love to be

included and will remember everybody's birthday and anniversary from WAY

BACK. We adopted our first son when we were at the group home and she still

thinks of him as hers and won't leave me alone til we see him, not so easy since

he is grown and gone now. is still asking us how to spell things and

wanting to learn whatever we are teaching the little ones.. it's so sad to know

what they could have been.

Wow, you are their family!!!! There are adults with MR who work in my

building and live in a group home. Many are in the same situation - no

family or no family who will have anything to do with them. There is one

woman with DS who is in her mid 50's - totally non-verbal, but oh so sweet!

I see the good in those who work with them and others in the building. I

can't tell you how many times I hear people say " if only we all lived in

their world " .

Funny, I saw a little girl who used to be on my caseload at Target on Friday

One of the only clues I had that she was the same little girl I met when

she was 2 (she's 4 now) were her incredibly blue eyes!!

She used to talk so fast that it was impossible to understand her. She

literally bounced off the walls. She had major sensory issues, which was why

I was seeing her. Her mom says that this little one is doing awesome in

preschool!

The girl talked to me about what she wanted for Christmas, sang Jingle Bells

The most impressive thing was that she was able to maintain eye contact,

maintain focus, and speak understandably!!

I love my job!!

Sue mom to Kate 15 and Karrie 8 w/ds and other issues

P.S. Please continue to pray for baby Madison. I saw her yesterday in the

PICU. She's sure a little fighter.
