Guest guest
Hi, all.... I felt left out with everyone sharing stories, so thought I would chime in, also. My DH and I did not know prior to our daughter's birth, I was actually convinced she was going to be a boy, we did not even know that much before hand. My water broke during our last Lamaze class I had just reached 36 weeks. My doc made the comment, " water doesn't usually break unless something else is going on " , but it did not register to me at the time. Abby was born at 6:46am, on Jan. 31, 2002 completely natural, I was very proud of that. Her apgar scores were 7 and 9, but they took her to the special care nursery since she was 4 weeks early. She was absolutely beautiful! (she still is). I could not tell at birth, I still do not " see it " , some people might view that as denial, I view it as when I see Abby, I see Abby for what she is, I do not see a child with ds, as that is not who she is. However, when the Dr said " we feel your daughter was born with ds " my brain searched for any info it knew on ds, all I could find was some TV shows I had seen with a character named Corky. I thought to myself, " ok, that's fine we can deal with that " . Do I cry? Sometimes...yes...recently I was at Wal-mart, alone, a rare moment when raising 3 kids, and a young man with ds was with his parents in line in front of me struck up a conversation, it was all I could do to hold back the tears until I finished checking out and left. One time, Burke (the TV Corky character) performed at my older children's elem. school, I cried through the whole performance. Our kids are born with something extra, the something I think the rest of are missing sometimes. I truly have an angel living in my house, I have heard her talking to them, I see the way she can change a complete strangers day, by waving and smiling at them. I even had a woman one time tell me, " she (meaning my daughter) is the best thing that has happened to me today. " That comment still makes me smile today. Thanks for listening to me ramble.... -Diane Take Care, -Diane
