My son was normal weight until he was 10, then he started packing on some

pounds. The cardiologist said it wouldn't be at all good on his hips (or the

rest

of his body for that matter).

We switched him to diet pop as he is quite a pop drinker. We started taking

him swimming several times a week. He also started growing taller around age 12.

Now he is 13 and is normal weight again. His doctor is really pleased. Once

in awhile he will try out our treadmill. He usually only does it for about 3

minutes, but I think over time, he might start to like it. It is right in front

of the TV, so the time goes by quickly.

As far as clothes go, he wears cargo pants which have elastic on the waist

and ankles. That way I don't have to hem! I get those from the Land's End

website. I don't think he has ever worn a pair of pants that were hemmed. It

would

be nice to see what those were like some time, but I don't own a sewing

machine. He also wears shorts as much as possible, and they look great on him.

Most of his pants and shorts have those plastic " click " belts attached to them.

They make it really easy on him. As far as shirts go, he only wears

short-sleeved ones. The long-sleeved ones are past the end of his fingers and

he

refuses to wear them. He usually won't even wear them if they have a snug cuff

around his wrist. Maybe he doesn't like the feel of long sleeves.

I was in kind of a dilemma about shoes as I feel the velcro ones often look

too babyish for a 13 year old. He wears the suede pull on shoes which are so

popular, but those aren't good for PE and don't give a lot of foot or ankle

support. Last spring I was in the Nordstrom children's shoes dept. and found

some

awesome shoes for him. They are velcro, but look very high-tec. The brand is

Merrell.

I'm hoping this kid reaches 5 feet tall, but he's not there yet.

My son is age 8 1/2 and is so skinny. But the slims are now almost too

slim, but the regular sizes are too big, they fall down. So that is our

problem here. He is small for his are, all the other kids are so much

bigger then he is. He wears a size 6. His thyroid has always tested normal

but I wonder if I should have his growth hormone checked. Anyone ever have

that done? Or should I just wait a couple more years until puberty starts?

Interesting question kelli. Micah is still wearing a size 18 month shirt and 12

month shorts. He will be 4 in October. He looks like he is about 18 months

old. Ped said he is okay but I wonder?

I solve this by buying jeans at Gap Kids. They have an adjustable piece of

elastic in the waist. It is great.
