Guest guest
I sent the following letter to the New Yorker in response to the recent article " The Fast Supper " . They informed me that they're planning to publish it in their next issue: I read your article on Calorie Restriction with interest. You neglected to mention another group which practises a more moderate (and much more doable) version of CR. We are the CR Support Group on Yaho ( /) with almost 2500 members and growing very fast. We believe that a BMI which ranges between18 and 22 is healthier than an extremely low one, and we have evidence and scientific studies in the files on our site to back this contention. There are many side effects to extremely low BMI's such as you discussed in your article. Sex drive which you mentioned is but one; some others are: feeling cold all the time, discomfort when sitting (due to bony derriere), constant hunger, irritablity, and depression. Although the jury is still out as far as humans are concerned, with these side effects, life will SEEM long indeed. One prominent scientist in the field has recently stated that he doubts that extreme CR will result in appreciably longer lifespan for humans. I hope you'll consider that CR need not be extreme to gain the benefits of better health and longer life. Sincerely, Francesca Skelton Founder, CR Support Group () fskelton@...
