I believe some recent papers have shown that it is the benzo(a)pyrene, its

metabolites and acrolein that are the major components of tobacco smoke

that cause the lung cancer. (acrolein and benzo(a)pyrene, fyi, are also

found in high concentrations in burnt meat, aka, grilling).

Nicotine is just the neuroaddictive component that gets you hooked to the

carcinogens.
