We are facing a similar problem. Zack has taken CCD (Catholic) for all the

elementary years with his peers. Next year he will be moving to the older

classes, preparing for Confirmation in three years. For Communion, at age 7,

the

Head of Religious Education met with us and we decided the criteria for Zack

to meet in order to get Communion. He met it easily. Since my husband is the

Catholic in the family (I am not), I told him that he should meet with this

woman again, and ask what the Church expects of Zack, and what, realistically,

we think he can contribute. Lately Zack has been rebelling about going to CCD

and church on Sundays. But, classes will now be on Wednesday nights, and I

think he might go as a " special " outing for him and his father. My husband is

tried of taking him, and is thinking about letting Zack wait until he is an

adult and can decide for himself. We were told by the Head of Religious

Education, a few years ago, that many children quit coming after Communion and

start

again just before Confirmation.

I'm letting my husband decide this. The Catholic Church we attend,

originally gave us a little flak about having Zack attend the " regular " class

instead

of the " special " class. But, they have been supportive since he started. Now,

I am wondering if it is time to, at least, look into the " special " class.

Anyone have any experience in this from the Catholic perspective?

I have a friend who's mother developed and implemented the program in their

parish for sp needs children to participate in CCD classes. I'll ask if I can

share her name and email.

We are struggling with an appropriate class for Bridget in our CCD program. We

have not gone for the past 2 years. I'd love to get some information & or a

website to visit to help Bridget be a part. Our Religious Education Director

wants her to be a part, but I'm left holding the bag because no one know how to

do this.

I just got a great book guys called " special needs, special ministry " by Jim

Pierson, Louise Tucker jones, and Pat Verbal. It is wonderful and explains

how to get a special needs ministry started in your church. Hope it helps!

How big is your parish? Ours is small and Mac has been attending regular

CCD for 3 years. The first two were preschool classes and I attended and

co-taught the classes, this year I sent him by himself and he's done fine.

I'm not sure if he's " getting it " but they mostly just focus on all the

great things God has made and being nice to everyone and loving them like

God did--so I haven't been too worried about it. I imagine as we head into

the road to communion we will have to have some discussions and decide what

Mac is going to do and how he is going to understand things and I'll

probably have to start going with him again. Does your husband attend CCD

WITH Zack? We don't have a special class, but the director of religious

education did ask me a few years ago if I wanted Mac to have or learn the

special curriculum (not sure what it was) and I asked how we would do that

and she said she'd get one of the teachers to teach him and I said when,

where, etc...and she said she could get someone to teach him in the extra

classroom at the same time the other classes were going on. I opted out of

that immediately. This discussion has given me some good leads to look for

more inclusive religious education information in the future.
