I think i dont drink enough water. Any Ideas to get more water into me? And does it have to be PLAIN water? I drink alot of Cranberry/Grape juice? Just wondering what the deal with water was.

Actually that was one of my lesser consumption days. I think it was 3 and one third collection bottles. I was going through about 15+ litres a day. (thats the size of one of those big bottles of water on a water dispenser) I have heard though of people who have had up to 30 litres a day.

Yes you do feel bloated, and can hear water sloshing and put on weight from all the fluid, your electrolites get screwed up. And the only think you want to drink, that helps is water. And thats still all I drink. (so nerrrrrrrrrrrrrr *pokes out tongue*)

Its from yet another rare condition called Diabetes Insipidus. Its where your pituatry gland does not produce enough ADH (Anti-diretic hormone) which is what tells your body to use water and how etc. So you are constantly thirsty, and if you dont drink you dehydrate in the clinical sense. There are genetic forms, injury forms, and poly dipsia (needing to drink alot) forms like I had from the neuosarcidosis. I even went through a water deprevation test - and yes it was as yuck as it sounds. Its got nothing to do with sugar diabetes.

It has settled now I am not as sick as I was initially, I would only drink up to approx 6 litres of water a day now, if that?? As I said I havent had a 24 hour urine test in so long. Might ask to have one for curiosities sakes :-)

I was constantly needing to drink, not kidding here. My body was constantly dehydrated no matter how much I drank. To this day I get flares of it, and have bottles of water around me. Should post my article thats going to be in the Diabetes Insipidus newsletter LOL.

Hey Mel,

Why do you think you dont drink enough water?

I drink spring water (bottled) at room temp as that's all I can tolerate. However you dont want to be drinking more then your body needs. They say 8 glasses a day, but many people have problems with that. And I think that is 8 glasses of water without any other kinds of drink.

Water is good for you, but I am sure having a few glasses of water and a few glasses of juice would be better as there are more nutrients for you that way.

For me I can only drink water cause of my illness. I cannot tolerate anything acidic or I get the palatal myoclonus so juice is out. I cannot cope with the smells of tea or coffee or I get the pm as well, so they are out. I cant tolerate milk, and live on mush cerial with soy so dont want to drink that, and cause of the diabetes insipidus factor I find that water is the only thing that helps quench my thirst, although even that doesnt help all that much some days. Most people with diabetes insipidus only drink water.

I think it depends on your own body, why you want to drink water, what you want to achieve etc.

I asked the doctor about drinking too much, since more

liquid in, makes the kidneys have to do more. She said it was

better to keep the kidneys flushed, than anything else.

Several doctors have told me to drink 4-5 quarts, so that's what I shoot

for.

LOL @ the hic... I was not aware at the time that I was drinking so much cause I was almost unconcious. It was when I was accutely ill. I do remember though, needing to drink all the time, and peed every hour. Very regular!! LOL

The instructions say not to urinate directly into the

bottle. I use a large disposable plastic cup, and transfer to the

jug, which must remain refrigerated. Hope that clears up your

mental picture.....<chuckle>

feel like you could pee. I go about every hour, during the

day. Less frequently at night.

My endo wants to check my kidney function more thoroughly. He had not done such a test on me before , eversince he first diagnosed me in 1999. It is a routine to check the kidney function of diabetic patients annually at my clinic here.

The only kidney function tests he did on me was:

- a creatinine test from a blood sample. I think the result is about 50 something. [We use a different scale from what is commonly used in the US. ] ,

- and a urine albumin test. I was tested positive for that when I was first diagnosed, but the doc told me not to worry as they said it is common for some people to have a little protein in their urine. I guess he is quite concerned about my kidney function as my mum had kidney failure, and I am taking painkillers too.

Refrigerate the jug??? It is much hotter in Singapore here, but the nurse did not instruct me to refrigerate the container. She only told me to collect the urine, and after the last collection, to make a marking of the level and shake the jug, then pour out a small sample into a specimen bottle, and dispose the rest of the urine. Then rinse the jug. [ahem, sounds very graphic, I know.]

methods for different tests. One I took once, had a preservative acid in

the bottle, that they told me not to get any of it on my skin. Every test

I will not get my results, until I go back to the

Nephrologist, next month. I'm sure if anything urgent would

show up, they'd call me in early. This was done as part of a

My sister's doc and my doc told each of us that we had the largest bladders they had ever seen. Talk about "Freaks of the Week"!! I also was accused of not urinating when told to once because the second part of the sonogram showed a normal sized full bladder, which is what mine looks like when emptied. I had to make the technician compare the first pictures, then she believed me. Isn't this a fun subject to share experiences on?????
