Guest guest
According to the May 2006 issue of the AARP Bulletin, roughly 11 percent of Americans 65 and older don't take any prescription drugs. Since over half of Americans are overweight or obese, it is not surprising that by 65 they have accumulated a variety of conditions that require medications for hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, osteoporosis, arthritis, insomnia, depression, etc. The article says that nearly half of older Americans take five or more medications daily. One of the cases illustrates the tendency by doctors to over-medicate. An 81-year old who exercises regularly has a resting pulse in the mid-40s. He says that the doctors always want to put him on drugs, but he politely declines. Tony
