How wonderful that you found someone to care for him after school that he enjoys. What " behaviors " or " issues " do you see the depakote helping with? It is one of the few meds that we haven't tried with . I have hesitated since I don't know that we could make it through the period of adjustment while his body gets used to the medication. Too bad about the behavioral psychologist. We have had bad experiences with two of them. One was clueless the other totally lacked follow through. We are now starting with a behavioral psych from our county to see what he can offer us. Anyway, Glad to hear the good news. Karyn
Guest guest
Your boss got that right. Many are educated but have NO COMMON SENSE! LOL! When we were interviewing Sped's for Micah I had one call who had her masters degree and she questioned why I had to have one who could sign. I explained that Micah was for the most part non-verbal and relied on the little signing he had, but that he also needed someone who could help him to communicate with his peers in nursery school (typical nursery school). She said " Well don't you want him to talk? " DUH!!! I said " Your kidding right? Of course we want him to talk BUT UNFORTUNATELT he can't right now and needs to communicate through another venue. " Needless to say she is not our SPED teacher. Where do they get these people??? Guest guest
I am so happy for you . I know you have had a long hard road and when something good starts to click it is such a joy and relief. I pray he continues to do so well. Loree Update on and his behaviors Hi Everyone. had a follow up appointment at KKI yesterday and he behaved very well this time! While we were there to see the neurologist, we talked to Dr. Capone in the waiting room. The depakote is working and I have a very loving child now with few episodes of aggressive behaviors. The only drawback of this medication is a 20% increase in body weight. My little guy now weighs 100 pounds! We'll have to change the medicine around a bit. I'm waiting to find out what changes will be made. As far as afterschool care, we found a 17 year old who is homeschooled and loves working with the MR population (as does her parents). Her mom works in my building with individuals with MR who are working on vocational skills (that program runs our mail for us) and her parents provide respite services. is happy to have a young person in the home who makes herself comfortable. The best thing I did for is to pull him out of his afterschool program. How many kids who are 10 really want to stay at school for an additional few hours??? So it's working. My stress level is way down, but best of all, is happy. Oh yea, we fired the behavioral psychologist - he was pretty stupid for someone with a PhD. He never did a family assessment, didn't develop a treatment plan and would not accomadate our schedules. He made many benighted and presumptive statements, too. The first one was during his first visit to the home and he said he didn't know what the problem was, was a sweet little boy. He spent 5 minutes observing him at his afterschool program ( fell asleep) and a few minutes at our home. That was clue #1. He also said " you don't want respond to because you are afraid it's going to get worse (meaning the physical aggression). Had he done a comprehensive family assessment, he would have known that I have lupus with chronic hives (bringing in the groceries and holding the dog leash can bring about hives - and getting hit stung like hell from the hives). He continuously compared his own children (who aren't neurologicall y impaired) to . He needs to go back to school and take some family therapy classes. He also questioned the doctors judgement - and to me, the doctors at KKI are the real experts and we have the utmost faith and trust in them. Anyways, I wanted to provide an update, especially for those who have children with behavioral issues that are more severe than your average child with DS. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
, I'm so glad that is doing well. How wonderful that you found someone to care for him after school that he enjoys. What " behaviors " or " issues " do you see the depakote helping with? Decreased physical aggressiveness, substantially - Mood swings diminished Impulsive behaviors Has helped with his obsession with lights/shadows It also appears he's not as anxious. It's been wonderful for him and he tolerates the medicine well. We do use the sprinkles, we started on depakane and it caused alot of tummy problems (mostly constant gas). --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
