Folks: please observe the rules of posting to the board. I just declined

a post about Dr. because the person wanted to post an excerpt from

his book; also this person didn't " think " he was any longer affiliated with

PETA.

If you want to defend someone and his work, then certainly that same

person's words are not the way to do it. Perhaps if someone else, like a

name we trust (Ornish?, some of Walford's proteges? etc.) backed up their

work, we might sit up and take notice. Or if you post some of these

so-called studies he casually mentions.

In this quote, claims that " protein causes cancer " and claims that

NIH backs him up, so where are the NIH studies he's talking about ? (I

doubt that thinks soy protein and other vegetarian proteins sources

cause cancer, although he makes a blanket statement implicating " protein " ).

And as I mentioned previously, my antenna go up if someone tosses out fish,

posted here in study after study as being health promoting.

Sorry for the rant, but we need our members to obey our posting rules.

That's what will keep this a quality board and not one that degenerates into

one that is unscientific that heeds every " flash in the pan " who comes

along and who may want to sell a book.

Dr Furman is absolutely right. There are times when everything is right, no mistakes are made, but still the patient doesn't make it. When I was recovering from my transplant I got CMV for the second time and ended up hospitalized back at Stanford. The first day I was there a very nice well meaning patient ask me if I knew Fred. Well Fred and I started the transplant process at the same time. We used to sit in the treatment room telling jokes and keeping the rest of the group entertained. So of course I was very interested in hearing how Fred was doing. Then she dropped the bomb that Fred had died from his second bout with CMV. Not exactly what I needed to hear right then. Nobody made any mistakes, nothing went wrong, the only difference in his death and my survival was that his body was not up for the battle

again.

What we can learn from this is everyone has to run their own race. You can't look at a friends dimise as what you have to look forward to, or as someone making a mistake. Each of us is different, we will respond to treatments differently and we can't let a friend losing their battle drag us down into a pit we can't climb out of.

For a couple of weeks fellow patients were dropping like flies from various complications. It was horrible, but I was able to convince myself that it was not going to be my fate. It was very difficult wondering if I was going to be next, but I wasn't going to let myself get into that pitty party and give up.Sue BunteThe greatness of a nation and it's moral progress may be judged by the way it's animals are treated.Mahatma Ghandi

Everyone will experience the passing of another patient in their own way. It is important for everyone to come to terms and deal with what they are feeling. I do believe that it is important though, and contrary to what has said, to not approach this as an opportunity to "figure out where the mistakes are". While being in control provides a great deal of comfort, please do not look at every bad outcome as a mistake. There are many different paths for everyone to choose from, and no one should question or have guilt regarding their earlier choices. Many went through this with Kurt as well, and it is probably not to anyone's advantage.Colin (and Kurt) were able to touch the lives of many people, and that is probably their greatest joy.Rick Furman>>
