Guest guest
So many of my friends have parents who have become "demented" or "senile". Not precisely Altzheimiers, but nonexistent short term memory. Anyone read anything indicating that CRON is effective is preventing dementia (or similar ailments)? Or, which nutrients are particularly helpful? Thanks!

Guest guest
I've just become aware of memory loss as a separate entity from the stroke, AD (alzheimers), etc because my sis-in-law at 83 has lost her, as in she doesn;t remember me. Not short term memory. She was a low fat, no milk, low meat, low sodium eater her whole life. Doc said she had no stroke. In pretty good condition physically. I can compare her diet with what you and I think are extremes. So what causes memory loss? I assume it's the same kind of thing in the sense that neurons are effected. Looking in medical books, alternative medical (AM) books, and articles by both there appears to be no consensus in prevention. But I do notice the medicals are including AM suggestions now. There always seems to be a gap between the PhD's in science and the MD's in practice. For example, I don't find things like carnosine in my medical online ref library. There are 1189 carnosine articles in pubmed and it looks important to me. There's also huperzine-A ref'd in Rakel: Integrative Medicine. But no carnosine. Huperzine (Huperzine A. Other Names: Chinese Club Moss, Hup A, Huperzia serrata, Lycopodium serrata, ) is cheap, but don't infer I'm pushing anything. I'm still looking. There are 207 articles on huperzine A. Progress in studies of huperzine A, a natural cholinesterase inhibitor from Chinese herbal medicine.Acta Pharmacol Sin. 2006 Jan;27(1):1-26. PMID: 16364207 IOW, I haven't any idea what to use and I'm not swayed as yet to guess which to use. These words "cholinesterase inhibitor" are an important search item. Until I talk to my doctor, I won't know the importance of carnosine, huperzine or maybe a hundred others. Regards. Guest guest
Bernadette, Walford's book BT120YD, p.161, says " The brain is about 60 percent fat, and one of the most important fatty acids in the brain is the omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA. " It is possible that our life-long ingestion of pastries and fried foods containing hydrogenated fats and oils oxidized at high temperatures affects the chemical composition of the brain to the extent that at some point it does not work. Optimum Nutrition might be more effective at preventing mental deterioration than Caloric Restriction. It is necessary to consume the essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (flax seed, sunflower seeds, fish oil) in adequate amounts to maintain a healthy body (including the brain).
