I have found that using a white paper towel dipped in water then dipped in a bowl fo baking powder makes an excellent "scrubber" of the film. That kind of film is usually hard water deposits mixed with a thin film of food "leavings". You can see all kinds of gunk on the white paper towel. When the damp, white paper towel with baking soda on it comes clean after rubbing, the film is gone!

Cloudy Container

I've had my 5200 for a couple of months now and it is all ready getting cloudy. I don't grind anything since I read that it would cloud up my container and I wanted to avoid that.Is there a way to brighten up the plastic and get rid of the cloudiness? Thanks in advance!

Another good way to uncloud your container is to fill it with hot water, drop in a denture cleaner tablet, and let it fizz a bit, then give it a good rinse. I fill mine again with hot water, add a bit of baking soda and give it a buzz, then rinse again. Works a charm every time. I also NEVER use commercial soap or detergents on my stuff-clouds them up every time. I prefer baking soda and peroxide as cleansers, rather than detergents. I don't even use detergents for laundry or dishwashing, preferring to make my own concoctions. From: Lea Ann Savage <lsavage@...>Subject: Re: Cloudy

You always come up with the best info. - I'm going to try baking soda and peroxide in lieu of dish detergent and see if it prevents the film from forming. I've noticed that Baking Soda when mixed with water gives the water a "slimy" feel - I wonder if it doesn't somehow lubricate and loosen deposits? The peroxide is the anti-bacterial agent - correct? Can you mix the two? How much peroxide do you use?

Thanks-I only came up with the "best" info when allergies forced me to find alternatives to standard things, lol. I just pour in a splash (maybe 4 tbsp) of peroxide, and a sprinkle (maybe 1/3 cup) baking soda-no exact amount. Its more about how long you buzz it (maybe a full minute, then soak for 10)

So is this your cleaning method for every use or just for " deep

cleaning " or a daily cleaning?

Our family uses our VM 5-6 times a day and I only do a bottle brush and

soap cleaning once a day (all of the other times I just rinse it out).

I've never been one to run it with soapy water like I do in my

demonstrations - I prefer the feel of using the bottle brush. I'm

thinking of replacing the daily cleaning with peroxide and baking soda

with my bottle brush...

I rinse it with hot water after every use, hot water, baking soda and peroxide after the final use of the day, then let air dry. I use mine all throughout the day too. I mainly use the baking soda because I grind grains, and find that it helps catch any hidden bits of loose grain that could mold or sprout in the bottom of the container-have had that happen-stinky!

I tried the denture cleaner followed by the baking soda bath. It looks a bit

better but is definitely still cloudy. I am surprised how worn it is after

using it less then three months. We do use it daily but I didn't expect that to

happen.

I will continue with the above steps perhaps as a weekly treatment though.

Thanks again!

Haven't seen this possibility discussed, but just wondering, you haven't I'm sure washed the container in the dishwasher by chance? Just wondering!! BroFrom: twinma0454 <marybeth@...> Sent: Mon, September 13, 2010 5:21:45 PMSubject:

I would suggest you try a white vinegar mix. 1 cup vinegar to water to fill container. Let it soak overnight. ~ Sent from my iPhone. On Sep 13, 2010, at 2:21 PM, "twinma0454" <marybeth@...> wrote:

i have some vases that have very long (like 2 feet to 4 foot long) necks that

are no larger around than a quarter coin. My florist told me to use the denture

cleanser in them to keep the necks clear. I have to tell you we don't use those

arrangements very often altho they are stunning simply because of the cleaning.

:)

I have been using just a little dribble of Dove in my VM canister to clean as

shown on the video but because of this thread I am thinking a little drizzle of

one of the enzymatic dishwasher cleaners like Cascade Complete might do a better

job of keeping it clear. That is designed to work on organic matter.

That is an excellent point - the dishwashing detergent is very caustic and is the main culprit where cloudy containers are concerned and that kind of damage to the plastic cannot be fixed with baking soda or denture cleaning methods.

My container did get go through the dishwasher by accident while we were on

vacation and my brother-in-law put it in. (darn him!) That was over a month ago

and it only happened the one time. Would one cycle be enough to make it

permanently cloudy?

Yep, unfortunately once is enough for harsh chemicals to wear down any sheen on the container. Makes you think about the residue that end up in your body from some of that stuff! From: twinma0454 <marybeth@...>Subject: Re: Cloudy Container Date: Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 12:07 PM

Hey there Beth,

Did you notice the cloudiness right after your brother in law washed it in the dishwasher? It seems hard for me to believe that one run through the diswasher would cloud it up that badly.

Do you have hard water (lots of minerals in it?)

I'd try the baking soda (damp on a paper towel) as an abrasive scrubber and rub a spot to see if you can get a spot clean. If you can't, I'd call Vitamix customer service and ask them if it is possible that an odd container here and there can become severely cloudy in just three month's use.

Thanks Lea Ann. I will try the baking soda scrub approach and then call c/s

service if it doesn't do the trick.
