All:

I do not contribute to this forum as I did earlier. a family crisis--not cardiac related--has kept me very busy and not in the mood to participate. But I have been lurking (hence the subect line above.) and the recent postings have made me feel somewhat gilty for not being more involved.

I belong to a number of e-groups. More than half are veterans joined by a particular commonality of service time or duty. some are old friends from Brooklyn in the 1940's and 1950's, others are jsut shared interests much as the is. All of them get to be personal expressions of unsolicited private opinions and beliefs that appeal to only two kinds of recipients: hose that agree in toto and those that find it necessary to argue the points. Both groups make everyone else wonder what the !#$%^ & *@ they are talking about. And often group members will leave for the simple reason they did not join to receive such material.

Still the importance of the group--any group--is what the members make of it. The has been IMO a two-edged sword of cardiac defense for all of us. it has provided a forum for shared information, most of cardiac care-intense, and a personal series of contacts for emotonal support. In both regards, it has IMO been outstanding. Only an occasional piece of spam slips through, and the level of compassion and interest in one another has been huge. if that is not enough for some, or it is not enough to weather the occasional personal opinion that is inappropriately expressed, then this forum is not serving their needs. Unfortunately only the most egregious offenses of theat nature should be used as group judgement if the character of the group has remained the same. There are, I am sure, many AICD recipients for whom this forum not only des not meet their needs, but may indeed be a negative among the things they seek. I pesonally am sorry if I have contributed to that, but just as not every group member is what we would seek for ourselves, not every person will find what they seek here.

I have gone hrough my own self-examination as to my membership in this group. I am an unapologetic punster and joke maker. I tell jokes all the time, often inapptoptiately and/or at the wrong time. I find the use of dirty and vulgar words to be unacceptable in my humor, but the subject of sex as being funny is never far from my dirty mind. I am sure I have offended many people over the years. I regret it, but it is who I am. In the same way this forum is who it is, and we either accept the failings or not, either ask someoene to change or leave ourselves.

For the newcomers, there are options beyond receiving each posting in your mailbox. You can check with Turk about those, and maybe one of those options will work best for you. The information on this forum is IMO priceless, and the cameraderie is very much akin to what battlefield colleagues experience. Yet those opinions are my own, and I do not wish to impose them on others. We all have own paths to walk. (Or crawl if we are married men.)

From california where the difference between e-groups and group sex is that e-group members all have a name at the top, and group sex doesn't even allow for ID tags or a place to pin one on.

It is people like you and many others that make this list so special.

Your courage and outlook while you were so ill was a great

inspiration to me. I, too, wrote, and even in your period of trial

you were gracious enough to reply. Even if there were little or no

information about our comman malady on the list, your presence and

those of all of the others who share with us would makje it eminently

worth while

May God Bless you.
