Guest guest
Aisha- Let me get this straight... you can buy codeine over the counter??? Yep. You can get it in Veganin, or in several other drugs like panadine and mercendol which are paracetamol and codeine. I cant take paracetalmol. The dose of the veganin is 2 tablets every 4 hours not to exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours - so thats 16mg codeine every 4 hours. I know in the USA you have to get it on perscription. I believe though that higher doeses of it are perscription only. I've been living on them the last month or so - dont think my neuro is gonna be too happy next week! He is a good man though so I'm sure something can be arranged. I only take one tablet every 4-8 hours so its not like I'm on heaps of them anyhow. *hugs* Love Aisha. Guest guest
Ms Pharmacy here: (only kidding, come from a pharmacy family, did rx's in the doc's office, pharm tech, both grandmother and grandfather were pharmacists 90 yrs ago, my dad was a pharmacist, put my dear x hubbie through pharmacy school,(it paid off in child support and alimony later :-)...........when you're around the meds a lot, you get to know them. At the doctors office, that was my job, to call pharmacies with ok's, no big deal, I just worked with a nurse that hadn't been in the field for a long time, and didn't know her meds very well, and didn't care about learning. The doc was happy with my job performance, so I just kept it while I was there for six yrs. I imagine if you grew up with your dad being a doctor, you'd know a lot about anatomy, disease, etc. I've always enjoyed knowing about meds. (Probably just enough to get me into trouble :-).....nah......I never recommend. The only thing I do is if I've tried something, and heaven knows I've tried a zillion, they've either worked well or they haven't! Everyone is different and reacts differently. Anyway, back to codeine: Tylenol with Cod#2 have 15 mg. of codeine and 300 mg.acetaminophen. Tylenol #3: 30 mg codeine 300 Acetaminophen So taking 2 of the OTC at 8 mg per tab= 1 Tylenol #2, pretty mild. The problem is not so much with the codeine but with the amount of acetaminiophen a day with your kidneys and liver, it's been awhile, so I'm pretty rusty. With tylenol it's not good to take over, I think, the magic number is 2500 mg of Tylenol. From what I was told after 2500 mg. of acet. a day, it starts becoming a toxic level. BTW, how many tablets come in a bottle? What the maximum you've seen? Is there a limit to the amount you can buy? Are they expensive? I'm not sure where the American dollar and the Australian dollar are in relation to one another. What do your doctors in Australia think about methadone for chronic pain, particularly FMS/CFS/MPS. The reason I ask is because there is a paper by Dr. Gatell in Atlanta GA, he has a website if you'd like to visit it. I had been on MS Contin for my pain, morphine sulfate controlled-release. Then I had MSIR, liquid morphine for breakthrough pain. Never worked well. Dr. Gatell was on a list with me, and he wrote me and told me that the best medication for pain control with FMS is methadone, he was absolutely right. How much you need is dependent on your pain level, your size, but I also had a lot of breakthrough pain once again. After seeing the doctor this week, he reevaluated and decided on a highter dosage, it's working really well now. I'm pretty sure his info on methadone for pain management, particularly FMS, is on his site. If you have any questions, Dr.Gatell has a place where you can email and ask him yourself. He's a great doc and willing to help you in any way he can. He also has a pain website on the e group, he also believes in the guaifennesin treatment for FMS. I have not had good luck with that. I'm glad to share any experience I've had, and appreciate your comments when I have questions. This has been a very friendly site and I really appreciate it. If you missed it before, I'm also a Pain Advocate, and will try to help people find doctors in their area to treat their pain. Generally, the pain doctors we use believe in narcotics along with other modalities. Some respond well with massage, accupuncture, pt, etc. Dr. Gatell is a great believer in the patient getting involved in healing themselves. He'll help you get there, but you need to help. Sometimes it's a slow process and can be very frustrating when you live with pain on a daily basis. I thought after my third sons left home, my husband and I would be able to take time off and take trips around the U.S./Ireland/Australia/NewZealand. I feel cheated in that I can't drive in a car for more than 30 min., maybe less without going into a flare. Putting pillows under my arms helps. Last time we took a trip to Minden Nevada, Carsen Valley Inn, where they take your money at the slot machines or tables. Norm and I have always been able to take a couple of trips a yr. When I first had to retire from the Dr.s office, all I did was sleep, and sleep some more. Last yr after missing two yrs we decided to give it a go, we're the last of the "big time spenders." The nickle machines is about our speed. Now you put in a twenty dollar bill and it gives you so many credits, my favorite was slot machine poker! Anyway, they have everything under one roof, really delicious food at a really reasonable price, they get it back, I think the restaurant would be considered a "lost leader." Lose money in the restaurant, but by keeping the players inside, you get it back quickly. The good news was that we had the day we arrived. Then I couldn't sleep, which ended keeping Norm up a good part of the night. From all the fun the day before, the ride, and playing, I slept the entire day of our two day trip! What a bummer! That's life, but my point is made, that our lives, even the little camping trips don't work, we love to camp in the mountains, just about an hr up the hill. By the time we get up there, set up the tent trailer, we just kick back and read and listen to the river. Then walk across the street to get a nice fattening Haagen'Daas ice cream, calories unbelievable! We decided when we camp, food has no calories! :-) ..........wish my rear end believed that! Unfortunately, the nights get real cool, in the forties, which I used to love and still do, but my legs dont, they cramp, then cramp some more, then the rest of my body. My point to all of this is what I'm sure many of you have found, that being chronically ill changes your life dramatically. Life just isn't what you thought it was going to be. That's life. Thanks for letting me tell you a little more about myself. I'm here if anyone you know needs a Pain Advocate in their area, some must travel for an hr plus, some even more. If I can't find you someone, I can find you the name of your State Pain Rep to help you. Thanks again for being here. Guest guest
OK - If you want to know more about it - prices, etc go here! http://203.42.242.90/PDsearchproduct.asp?cpage=1 & mysearchterm=VEGANIN "BTW, how many tablets come in a bottle?" 100 tablets in a packet Dose 2 tablets every four hours not more then 8 tablest in 24 hours. "Is there a limit to the amount you can buy?" Nope "Are they expensive? I'm not sure where the American dollar and the Australian dollar are in relation to one another." Double it at the moment. If its 50 cents US its $1 Aussie. "What do your doctors in Australia think about methadone for chronic pain" I have never had to discuss chronic pain with my doctors. Having only had a confirmed dignosis January this year and being monitored with meds etc chronic pain has been the lest of our problems. Veganin is made by Warner Lambert who have just merged with Phzizzer (sp) (they make zoloft) And there is nothing on their webpages about Veganin. Sorry! Thats all I can tell you. According to the Tylenol Arthritis Extended Release Caplets 650 mg each, it says no more than 6 caplets in a 24 hour period... that is 3900 mg. The Extra Strength Tylenol / paracetamol (acetaminophen) 500mg each, says no more than 8 caplets in 24 hours... that is 4g (4000 mg). The amount you can take really depends on your weight though. But I am having a pretty hard time getting the mg/kg deal. Everyone just says 4g in 24 hours. But think about it... a 200 lbs. (91 kg) adult can take 4g with no problems... but a 100 lbs. (45 kg) would OVERDOSE on 4 g.
