CZ,

That is terrible! How could people do such a thing? I think I agree with the finger!

Re: hi

the things people say about my eyes are "nobody's home" and sometimes that i look right through people. i used to hear things that people meant to be private sometimes because people would talk around me as if i wasn't there. i think it's funny when people do that. i can look at peoples eyes but i don't like doing it because i don't get any communication from them and other people don't like me looking at their eyes either. i have been told that i make people uncomfortable when i look in their eyes.CZ

i suppose the same way people talk about babies or little children when

they are around as if they can't hear. if people think that you are not

all there in your brain then they start talking about you as if you

can't hear them or understand them.

Hey Kelli,

Thanks for your wonderful encouragement. I think you're right about the siblings being a big help. My Bridget is a fourth child. She's 3 and has abrother 6, 8 and a sister 9. the other kids really look after her, but she is the bossiest kid inthe family.

I will get her into a cast just unsure how to make it happen right now. Must go off to work now.

Where was your husbands family from? So many regions, so many languages ( 5 to be exact), etc.. A big diverse country but great great people...

My little boy is doing great, mentally as stubborn as an ox, physically he will conquor anything he wants, thus what more can a mom want!!! He has both Scoliosis lumbar at orginally 50 degrees down to 22 in his first cast, and AMC which is arthrogryposis which is a fixation or deformation of his tendons and limbs, thus he was born with club feet and doesn´t use his last three fingers on each hand, but he is now 2 and half and is trying to walk, thus he will conquor everything. He has no muscle tone so protein shakes are a part of his life..But, he is our third child has a brother 7 and one 5, thus he is well taken care of by everyone. Finally found the right doctors here in Spain, took awhile, but we did it...Tell me about your child, how old etc...And don´t forget to tell me where your husband comes from...

Hi ,

Sounds like a really tough trip, and you are right much worse on the parents then the children. I was so happy in one respect that they were able to get such great correction, that is a good sign right? But, sorry that it caused Olivia so much pain, but like you said a little at a time...

It was so nice to talk on the phone to you, did you get the package yet? I put it in the hands of my mom to send and that is sometimes dangerous..Thus, I know it is on the way soon I will just keep on top of her for a couple of days..Also, from here we sent a donation to the foundation and also included some pictures, if I am sending it you will get it I promise.. Also, concerning the video. Do you want me to make several copies in PAL for you? It might be nice for you to have on hand to send to Europe when needed, or another option to save on all the mailing overseas, is you can tell me when you need one sent here in Europe and I can send it from here, no overseas costs involved.. Let me know what you think. Also, when you are ready send me the web site and I will start the translations for you.. Might take a while but I will get started. Hope all is going well now for you and Olivia, take care..

Hi everyone,Olivia got her EDF cast applied early tuesday afternoon and by tuesday eve at 8:30p.m., we had to saw it off....Olivias doc got so much correction in this cast, that it was unbearable for her. She was in pain w/ muscle spasmos (thats Moriahs word), and her doc and I felt it best it be removed. For a while, I was unsure if it should be removed....but her pain made it clear to my brother and I, and her doc that it was too much (correction that is)...Olivia has never had problems in a Risser cast, and this was not a Risser. This was a Mehta cast (EDF) through and through! It was beautiful. It was obvious that her doc has learned alot from Miss Mehta and I have lost no faith in him for that! This is just one more example

of why ISOP needs Miss Mehta here ASAP to teach these docs. She has dedicated her career to this treatment and can guide them in situations such as Olivias. Which, BTW, is very different from most on this group. My take on the whole situation, (her docs and Miss Mehtas too), is that she was over corrected. Olivia has a 90 degree curve at this point and she is almost 7 yrs old. Correction in a juvenile (who's bones, fascia, connective tissues, etc. have been held in this uncorrect position for so long) cannot be manipulated down in an EDF/Mehta cast that much. Its okay for babies because they bones, etc. have not been in the uncorrected position for that long, and their bones are still really flexible.Children such as Olivia (90 deg juvenile, upper thoracic) must be corrected in small stages. You can manipulate a babies curve of a lesser degree in a an edf cast, but a older child must be done in stages. This is not saying that Olivia

will ever be corrected by these casts. She will not....But we hope to go through a couple more halos mixed with EDF/Mehta casts for the next 6 yrs, in effort to get her to her full growth. We have half the battle won!Sorry, it took so long for the update. The trip was a rough one, and i really had to take a day to get back into the swing of things.Feel free to ask more about our trip, if you need to.Glad we're home!Olivia was in school by thurs, and seems to be back to her loving self. (I think these trips are harder on me..)talk soon,HRH

:

I'm not sure if this will help right away... it's sort of something that

takes awhile to make the connection.

When was having so many sticks starting at age one, I started off by

letting her pick a small toy every time she had an upsetting medical procedure.

I wasn't sure this " bribery " was the right thing to do... plus at a couple

dollars per toy, it was getting expensive! Eventually I changed it to a certain

favorite treat every time she got a stick. Still wasn't sure about this

(associating eating with upset), but kept doing it. Eventually, she began to

associate getting a stick with getting a special treat.

At some point she was able to see it as, " well, it sure stinks to get a stick

but hey... wait... do I get a Bakery Cookie after?!!!?! " At some point,

getting something in exchange for the rotten experience took the sting out of it

enough she was able to look past the pain and think of the benefit: " this will

get me better " . I don't know if this positive association is the reason, but

she stopped crying for sticks around age three.

Possibly due to watching get so many shots, IVs, etc. and not cry...

it's interesting to note that Baby Kate does not cry for shots about 50% of the

time, if you can believe that (the first time that happened I was worried Kate

was not normal! how could she not cry?!)! It helps to get a good nurse, too

-- I've noticed a definite " touch " some nurses have. Our favorite nurse always

rubs the finger tip before a finger stick, this seems to numb it nicely. She

also distracts Kate by ripping apart a cotton ball in front of her face before

and after the shot... amazing how that works!

As far as the bribery (I prefer to call it " positive association " )... maybe a

coloring book or sheet of stickers could substitute for the sugary treat?

Hope that helps --

(mom to , age 5-3/4, dairy intolerant-related GERD -- currently

has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had transient IgG, IgA, t-cell &

other defs... and also to Kate, age 2, dairy intolerant)
