As an aside, I find it interesting the number of medics whose companies have

no topside medical cover. Is it possible to do some kind of unscientific

poll to determine how many medics operate without a doctors backup? Maybe

via .co.uk?

In the same vein an online polling option would be very interesting on a

number of fronts- How many doctors vs paramedics vs RNs vs forces medics on

the list, where do we work by region, etc.

Surely there is some web passed polling software that could be adapted to

this.

Paramedic worthy or not?

Hi ladies and Gents,

I have been following the general traffic on " are Paramedics worthy " to be

offshore/onshore..

well here is my experience in the past 6 months. I attended the offshore

course with AON now Capita back in Feb of this year. I used my military

medic with 12 yrs of service to get me through the door. On my CV i

highlighted the fact that i was a paramedic with the Warwickshire ambulance

service and was told that, that would NOT get me bonus points for a bum on

seat on the course but 12 years Military would. So i attended, passed, and

now i'm here in Freezing cold Kuwait (not!). Who i work very closely with

nothing but US paramedics. These guys may have little hands on clinical

experience or a wide clinical spectrum of skills. My partner out here is a

paramedic and has adapted to the clinical side of life in no time atall.

Infact a general point i want to make here, he's actually left Kuwait and

gone to Iraq to open his own clinic with no problema atall. So my point is

YES paramedics are worthies.

Also my job in the military was protected with top cover i.e doctors in the

house so i could rely on them to dispence antibiotics, out here i don't have

the TOP COVER and i'm giving out prescription drugs therfore practising new

skills. So i'f i'm able to adapt, then WHY can't paramedics be worthies with

some offshore training organisations. Hmmm My 2 pence worth,

Hi ,

there is a facility to do this on the remote medics website - all can fill in

their details as they wish, but not many have taken up the offer so far ..!

To my mind it doesn't matter if you have paramedic, ex-forces or Nurse

qualifications - just being out here doing the job is enough... Those who want

to work in the UK offshore must find a training provider - and one who takes

their qualifications /experience etc.. And there are providers out there who

will take them.

So - we are all remote medics, regardless of baseline qualifications. Capita

have set their entry level, Interdive have set theirs ... The employing company

have set their entry levels & will only employ who they like .....End of story.

Topside cover - this is a difficult thing to discuss, as all UK offshore

installations require to have topside, Medics must work under protocols for

dispensing Prescription Only Medications (POM's) - as part of UK law, out side

of the UK is a different story - I expect it is a case of depending who you are

working for and where .. .. and if the companies or individuals insurance will

cover medics giving out POM's....

the DipROM update list a couple of months back.

Mil Med 23%

DMT 8%

Fire 15%

Para 8%

Hi Ross,

Good Idea for a poll, however the wording of the poll may be a slight problem,

as I'm qualified as a nurse, ex forces, but work offshore where paramedical

skills are required but rarely used .... Difficult to fit in to the single hit

description ? ...

Sooooo could the poll be set up to include offshore medic, as a lot of our

members are working in remote zones not offshore or oil based ...

I appreciate that the main thing is to identify who does what with what

qualifications ... But as we have already said - medics offshore all have the

same ticket - so no need to split them up in to nurses/ ex-military/ paramedic

.... etc ..

(I've posted my self as nurse ...)
