I made one last year (I think the original recipe was from Cat) and it's

very easy: Just add a few drops of EO/FO to vaseline. To blend it easier

you can melt the vaseline. Fill it in little jars and keep it well closed.

Hi Marie:

Glad to help! Here is a recipe for " Un-Petroleum Jelly " from Coffin

found in the Toiletries library:

2 oz. beeswax

1 cup almond, or other oil

Melt the wax in a microwave or double boiler. Add the oil. Remove from

heat and stir until cool.

> I was also wondering if there was a recipe for a vegetable based

" petroleum

> jelly " ... something with that same consistency. - an un-petroleum jelly.

I've made this and it comes out quite hard, more like a balm than petroleum

jelly. Next time I make it, I'm going to cut the wax amount in half and

work from there to get a more jelly-like consistency.

The irish moss, carrageen is probably available at art stores.

Would arrowroot powder or work as well? or what about

mucilage of gum tragacanth?

Hi Rox:

If you're not adept at mixing products with water, and knowing the right

preservative to use, in the correct amount, you can run into a

bacteriological nightmare. I'm going to experiment this week with a great

aloe vera product I've used for years. It's organic aloe vera gel from

http://www.lilyofthedesert.com/pages/pages_products.asp This is in no way

an endorsement for this company, NCI, of course. I just want you to see the

different kinds of gel available. I buy their gelly in a squeeze tube, and

only once did I have one go bad, after maybe a year. contains: 99.5%

*Certified Organic Aloe Vera Gel, Carbomer 940, Vitamin A, C, and E .

Carbomer 940 is a gelling agent. You can read more about it here:

http://www.snowdriftfarm.com/form_carbomer_pre-gel.html

I'd go the aloe vera route, myself, because so many people know it, love

it, and look for it in body care products.

Another thing to keep in mind, something I thought about since I first

brought up the gel-based perfumes that Sephora is releasing for summer:

how strong do you have to make it, it's perhaps only a seasonal item (I

can't see many people wanting to slather perfume gel on their arms in

December), and are you (or I) prepared to start filling Malibu tubes or

other squeeze containers for the product?
