I personally don't like to do paypal because they charge you a high % fee and it takes about 3 days to get the money in the bank & that can be frustrating. The big question, I want to accept charge cards, and was wondering what (if you do) you use to accept charge cards. On a side note, I'm also being charged through the nose to use the charge card machine at work (salon) and can use the set up I get for shows for work also hopefully. Your local bank can help you or Sam's Club offers merchant accounts. The credit card machines (terminals) are running $600-$800 dollars. You will need the newer version so that you can hand enter numbers from website orders I think Paypal now offers credit card processing accounts but they don't have the terminal set up that you are needing. This is the first year that I started to do shows and vending events. I don't necessary have the funds to buy expensive equipment. I've tried a few things in the pass... Propay.com - for me at the time they only allowed you to use your social security number to set up an account - I wanted to us my Tax ID. Paypal - I do use this for my website. I know the % can be high and it does take about 3 business days before the money is transfered into my account but there is no monthly fee. I have also use Paypal's Virtual Terminal (while is was free of course) they charge $20 per month which is not bad I guess. When I did use Paypal's Virtual Terminal I purchased and still use a manual card swiper (it's very primitive I know, but it gets the job done)I know that they are sold on eBay. Here are two - Item number: 200001044019 and Item number: 290000466948. I ended up buying a Quickbooks Credit Card Processing kit, which I love, from one of the office supply stores. It was about $40 I set that all up. It cost about $16.00 per month - you would have to look it up for the percentage rates. I don't remember them off hand. They offer 800 numbers to call to get Authorization on a charge while you are out and not near a computer. OK finally here is what I do. I use the manual credit card imprinter and have the customer sign the form. I use my cell phone to call for an authorization. Then when I get home I run the card. And unlike PayPal the money is transfered directly in to my bank account within about 3 business days. Right now, all in all it cost me about $16 per month plus the percentage that is charged when the card is processed. And remember this is a cost of doing business so it can be a write off on your business taxes. For me that is a small price to pay to be able to take credit cards while at out at a show or vending event. Besides people spend more money when using credit cards, I know I do. They set me up with 2 business accounts for free - no monthly charge. 1= operating account 2= tax account Also my credit card account. If you don't mind using the knuckle buster it is free account with a nominal processing fee. You have the manual imprinter which you have them sign with? what is on your plate that has your info? does quickbooks give you an acct number and info to put on there? do you ever send the cc slip in to a bank or is it just to have on file with a signature? Once they sign it, you use your cell phone to call into the quickbooks place, give them the customers cc number (while customer is standing there?) and get a verbal authorization number? then when you get home you use quickbooks to run the credit card thru so it actually makes the sale at that point? thanks! This included the knuckle buster, charge receipts, credit receipts, plates for the machine with my account number on them, visa/master card signs for my booth. The only fee I pay is the processing fee that everyone has to pay no matter who you use. There is no monthly fee. Wells Fargo did the same thing for me the only difference was. If a customer used a credit card during the month it was free. If not there was a $30.00 penality for the given month. They also sent me the machine, receipts, signs etc. I switched to Compass Bank due to the credit card non use penality with Wells Fargo. Once I swipe the card I have the customer Sign the Credit card form and before I let them leave, I call the appropriate 800 number there are about 3, once for MasterCard and Visa, one for Discover, and one for American express. (Remember you can call the 800 # at any time of the transaction it's up to when you fell it's the right time to obtain the authorization). Once you sign up with any merchant account they will provide you with a merchant number. I do not send the signed slip in. BUT I do keep it on file just in case. (I also ask for ID at the time of purchase) Yes, I call into one of the 800 numbers (it's all automated) and listen to the prompts and I then get a authorization number. (oh yes while the customer is standing there.) I also ask them for there credit card billing address and phone number. Remember if it declines then you would not sell them the merchandise. Yes again, when I get home I run the card at that time. See once you get the authorization number the amount is held for you to run the card. I think of it like when you rent a car. The rental company sometimes put a hold on a set amount on your card until it's charged or released. Once you decide what merchant credit card company you want to go with, I do STRONGLY URGE you to read more about the process. I have 2 accounts with with compass bank for the last 3 years. And when I went to set up a merchant account for charge cards they wanted to charge me for the machine and it was not cheap, I don't remember right now, but it was to expensive for me.
