Hi, Yoshi.

Have you tried:

I used 1 cup grated Fels Naptha bar

1/2 c washing soda

1/2 c borax

I got this recipe from a list, I can't remember which one so if I'm stepping on

toes I apologize. You use 1T for light loads and 2 for heavy loads. I really

never had residue, but sometimes the Fels didn't melt all the way. It does a

great job cleaning, though, and there is no real odor left behind. My son has

allergies and asthma, along with skin trouble, so this is a great alternative.I

now use a liquid form of this. If you want the recipe for that one as well let

me know.

Laundry Powder

Hello,

I have been making our own soaps & lotions for quite a while as

everyone in my immediate family (except me) is extremely sensitive to

commercial soaps. Up until last fall there was one laundry detergent

on the market that didn't cause severe reactions, but unfortunately

they changed something in their formula.

I have been trying to make our own laundry powder since last fall and

have 'most' of the problems worked out Except for soap residue. I

add the vinegar to the rinse water and it takes care of the residue

in the washing machine, but after 6+ weeks of washing you can

certainly tell that the whites are not white and the colors are veryr

dull, so I think there must be residue on the clothing too.

Does anyone have a laundry recipe that gave them better results?

I searched the archives and found one that sounded good except it

used Ivory (can't even use that).

I am just making this for my family and really need some help &

guidance.

TIA,

Yoshi

Hi

If you add borax to the soap batch it will help with discoloration,

however, however, all natural laundry soap will discolor over time,

unless you add bleach or oxygen cleaner with your washing.

To a 1 lb batch of laundry soap batch, add 2 tb borax, and mix in

well, then pour into mold.

I use cheap shortening 50 % and coconut oil 25 % and lard 25% for the

soap base. Do not discount lye amount. You can discount water amount

by 25 % but be aware it will trace very fast. Take out of mold in one

to two days when firm, and grate with good vegetable grater and then

place in containers to dry for a few weeks.

I have improvised on the fels naptha recipe and have come up with what I

think is a winner! I make lot of it at once because I have 6 folks in

my house, and we do LOTS of washing! LOL

3 bars fels naptha

3 bars ZOTE (it's not sold everywhere - it's a big PINK bar of soap. If

you can't find ZOTE, pure & natural works well.)

4 cups each borax, washing soda, baking soda

For added umph, I buy a cheapie box of always save fabric bleach and an

off brand oxiclean knock-off. I add about half of both to the powdered

mixture.

First - grate the soap, put in a huge bowl or pot (I use my large enamel

pot that I use as the bottom half of a double boiler), add the powders

and about 2 capfuls of orange eo and lavender eo, mix together (with

gloved hands), and then powder it in the food processor. I then store

it in and old tide box I've kept and use 1-2 scoops per load. I also

use the downy ball filled with vinegar and a few drops of my fave

fragrance oil (aloe, cuz it smells so CLEAN!) for the rinse cycle.

When washing whites, I use peroxide in place of bleach. I buy it by the

gallon at a local chemical supply store - same place I get my lye. They

sell it in 35% technical grade, which is WAY stronger than the 3% they

sell in the store. I mixed some is a spray bottle - 3 parts water to 1

part peroxide - and sprayed it on some spots on the white clothes

(specifically, blood stains). They came out completely and my clothes

were incredibly white!

Wow! Thanks everyone, for you great suggestions.

As a 'nonprofessional' soaper, I certainly didn't think about some of

the additivies like borax and oxy-booster (duh).

I love the idea of using the Fels Naptha -- so quick -- but I think

I'm going to shy away from that in case it contains the mysterious

ingredients that tend to melt my family's skin.

BTW: Is there a difference between adding the borax to the soap pot

vs. adding it during the grinding/powdering stage?

Thanks, thanks, thanks!
