Welcom to the group! :) I'm sure dozens of members are shaking their heads

saying, " been there, done that " . I wouldn't lose hope. There are many

different opinions among doctors out there, and everyone's situation is

different. If you are not happy with one doctor, go to another one. I see

you have already done that. I saw six different orthopedic surgeons in six

months, then made up my own mind as to the course of action. If I were in

your shoes, here is what I would do with what info you have provided. First

of all, I would get on a rigorous exercise program. Here is the place to

start;

http://www.ohsu.edu/orthopaedics/dc_knee.htm

If you are minimally functional, I would not go further than straight leg

lifts and hamstring stretches. You might even ask your doctor for a

cortisone shot to get on top of the pain. If this just doesn't work, or if

you are already in too much pain to function even minimally, then I would go

back to the first doctor you went to and ask for a MRI for diagnosis

confirmation before LR surgery. If you have any more questions, don't be

afraid to ask. I had a LR on both my knees in April and it has helped a

lot.

Don't give up hope. Don't reject the idea of a lateral release. Try McConnell

taping of your kneecap (get your doc to send to you PT to learn how). Do

exercises to strengthen the VMO (if you want to get details you can write me

privately -- I've posted them here so many times I don't want to bore everyone).

Knee taping has helped a lot of us. It's a drag to do it a lot, but better than

being crippled.

DougfromCT here got relief from prolotherapy. He posted links to that a couple

of weeks ago. See if you can find them in the archives.

URGENT: questions about CP

hihi, i am new to this group. i am 17 yrs old and has been having

knee problems since last year. i was first diagnosed as laterall

tracking of patella and the doc wanted to do a lateral release op for

me. but i was unsure so i sought second opinion and the doc told me

there was no need for surgery. just do some exercise to strengthen

muscles around knee. but now i cant walk for long, cant stand for

long, sports are out for me. there is always this popping sound with

i squat and sometimes when i extend my knee. also, there is ths

squeeshi feel when i hold my patella. like tissues moving inside or

sth. erm, is this problem incurable? and it will just get worse? will

i have to live with it for the rest of my life? i heard a lot of pple

going for surgery but got worse. how old are all of you out there? am

i very young to get such a problem? my knees are starting to give way

occassionally when i walk. is this quite serious alreay? did you all

go for MRI scans or anything to check cartilage? cos i know that x

ray will show nothings. sigh, quite sad.. i mean.. i am so young.. i

read somewhere that by 20 plus years old, one cant walk anymore? is

this true? thank you to anyone who replies.

I also had an LR in '95 and it worked 100%, no bad effects, until I began to

have other knee problems in '99.

You need to talk to your doctor about these things. Tell him the same

things you have here. We can only give advice and support, we are not

doctors. You also need a local support system (family, friends, counselor).

I know personally how discouraging this can be. It will get better. Please

tell us a little more about yourself.....who you are and where you are from.
