Guest guest Posted September 16, 2004 Report Share Posted September 16, 2004 June, is the rollerator the rolling walker with a seat? would like to know more about it. my concern right now is the transportation of the scooter. would hate to have one and then not be able to use it to make me more mobile and able to get around the city. I am looking for anyway to keep me a viable part of the community. I don't ever want to lose my independence! As far as funding goes, there is a program in land throught the government where you can apply for assistance. There main goal is to keep the disabled in the community. In other words, if a ramp is needed for your house they will provide funding. When funds are available, and you become approved, you are eligible for up to $2000 every year for any accomodations neccessary to enable you to be an active member of a community. I got the Nova 4202 Cruiser Deluxe Rollerator at www.scooterville.com I looked at the same thing at www.phc-online.com Yes, it has a seat - and brakes you can put on so sit doesn't roll out from under you if you sit down. And a basket for carrying small packages. It is really neat. And I think it will be worth it as, like you, I want to remain independent as long as possible. When it comes time for a scooter I will have to check into ramps but from experience - my mom who lived with me in her last years was in a wheelchair for 3 years (post polio neuropathy) and I had inquired then. Seems the space between my front porch & sidewalk is too narrow - ramp would be too steep. Back has 7 steps but maybe if I go all the way out the yard the incline would be workable. I have a chair lift in the house from when she lived with me (she died in 1991). It is broken but I know have a repairman coming (one of these days) to look at it. That gets me between the 1st & 2nd floor - I have a basement where the laundry is and a 3rd floor with a bed and bath for my grandkids etc when they visit. I really think I need a first floor apartment one of these days, but I lived on this street 60 of my 70 years and hate to go now. Oh, well, enough complaints from me. It will all work out somehow, someday. For now I have my " Red Rooster " (named the Rollerator) and we will see how it goes. I am 5ft 5 and they have on the instructions to put the handles at your hip joint - works fine there for me. I am sure if you are comfortable with a grocery cart you would be comfortable with the Rollerator. And the wheels are 8 inches so it glides very nice, not jerky like some grocery carts. I got a Nova 4202 Cruiser Deluxe (it was on sale) at www.scooterville.com I also saw the same thing, same price, at www.phc-online.com I am sure there are other sites. To find those I went to www.google.com and typed in the word rollerator, or even type in walker with wheels and all these sites come up. Colors don't make it any more efficient but it is nice to have a choice - they had black, red, green, blue and purple. I got red (to match my Ford Escort). Hope it works out for you. I think it will help me a lot - I tried it out here in the house and I can walk 75% better than without it - no fear of falling, etc as it is very sturdy.Good luck with your decision. I saw that at a disability convention and " fell in love " with it! an apartment or condo sure would be easier for you, but i understand about not wanting to leave where you have always lived. After trying it out, I found it moved too easily and the brake handles were too hard to operate for me. So I bought a walker with front wheels and gliders on the back.
