who has IgA deficiency sometimes had mouth ulcers that just seemed

to get bigger and bigger and wouldn't heal on their own. We found that by

putting soluble zinc (such as zinc acetate) 4 or 5 times a day on the ulcers

seemed to allow them to get better. Orajel has zinc chloride 0.1% in it so

it may be that zinc ions somehow help the healing process. We still found

that the healing was a slow process

Martha (mom to IgA deficiency, polysaccharide coated

antibody deficiency etc.)

Hi

I know that there is a brilliant homeopathic remedy which sorts this out fast... cannot recall the name.. think it is flouricum acidicum.. Helios will be brilliant at finding the best one..as there are many remedies which will resolve the problem.

does you daughter use Fluoridee toothpaste at all? I have heard of cases of mouth ulcers when toothpaste is not rinsed properly... made worse if you are in an area where water is fluordated like in Brum .

Hi All,My dd has suddenly developed mouth ulcers - does anyone know what causes them and whether they indicate a shortage of anything. Also, we have used Bonjela Gel ever since she was a baby - I see that it is now not recommended for anyone under 16, is this something that it likely to cause problems for our children? Many thanks.

Thanks Tracey,

I'll contact Helios. We don't use fluoride toothpaste. She has recently started

using Green People citrus & aloe vera toothpaste - whether it is that. Before

she was using the fennel toothpaste and she was fine. We are Welsh Water who I

don't think fouridate their water, currently in the North West which also I

don't think is flouridated.

Hi

I found this interesting article about fluoride being added to Milk in primary schools in Sheffield.. - Unfortunately I could not get a list of places that add fluoride.. I know that South Staffs do as do the suppliers in the Birmingham area.. I think that there was also a major supply in Scotland think it may have been Edinburgh..

In 2006 is the then GVT were pushing to make it compulsory in all areas... though did not keep up with the issue to identify whether more areas were adding it in.

Citrus can be very aggrevating.. is an issue with one of my boys... Do you know how to muscle test at all?  may be able to identify if toothpaste is the culprit by muscle testing it on your daughter.

Best Wishes

IRON!!!  IRON!!!  If it is an iron shortage and you give her some iron, the ulcers will clear up in a short time.  Both my son and myself get mouth ulcers, as soon as I give him a couple sachets of spatone, they go away.  I cannot keep him on spatone as it constipates him but when he develops an ulcer it clears it up and I give it to him for a couple of weeks.

The same with me, if I get one I can take an iron tablet and it will clear up in a matter of hours.  There are, obviously other things that can cause ulcers but this is definitely one of the causes.

just a thought, Tom doesn't tolerate iron supplements so thought I'd

add that eating liver is a really good source of iron.

Hi Alison, thanks for this. Not only will it be useful for my dd, but, also for

my sister who has also just had a stem cell transplant - her mouth has been

awful, I'll pass the info on to her.

Thanks Tracey, Darla and Sara,

I've given her some spatone, so will see what happens. Unfortunately as she is

vegetarian I can't give her liver!

Thanks Darla, I'll try the apricots. It must have been an iron shortage as after

2 sachets of spatone the ulcers went - amazing that's only 2 days!

My daughter who is NOT immune deficient gets chronic mout sores. WE use lysine

at 1000mg 2x a day when she gets them. I would talk to you Dr. but it really

does prevent them. She had mono when she was 5 years old and so I think they r

from a herpes virus in her case. There is also some films available for cold

sores that have helped her. We also have used a mixture of Benadryl, maalox and

lidocaine to numb them in a wash. She hated the taste so not sure that will work

for all. Barbie

My son has CVID but also Chronic Neutropenia.....

He suffered with those mouth sores for years.....we went to ENTs oral surgeons,

GI, tried aloe vera, rinses with maalox/benadryl/steroids...nothing

helped...they just got worse..

until the hematologist at the Bone Marrow Failure Clinic told us that they are a

hallmark of Neutropenia! His bone marrow biopsy showed only 20%

cellularity.....his WBC and ANC were terrible....he was started on Neupogen

(Granulocyte-colony-stimulating -factor) The mouth ulcers were gone .....He gets

them rarely if his ANC goes down, but nothing like the torture they gave him for

so many years!.....look into neutropenia.......sue

Hi, my 6 year old daughter with CVID has been experiencing mouth ulcers for

years. They are usually on her inner cheeks and go away rather quicly, but for

the last several days she has two in her mouth along her lower gumline on the

side. THey are very painful. Does anyone else experience these and what helps

them go away quickly as well as keep the pain down. Would love some advice. Is

this something common with CVID? THanks :)
