High levels of homocysteine are said to be a marker for heart disease and thought to be a risk factor for atherosclerotic disease, which contributes to heart attacks. The link between homocysteine and cardiovascular health was founded on the observation that children with homocystinuria—a rare genetic condition causing extreme elevations in homocysteine levels—have higher rates of cardiovascular disease. That observation was then generalized to the wider population, with the hypothesis indicating that supplementation with B vitamins may reduce blood homocysteine levels and thereby reduce the risk of heart disease. Now scientists have shown that low daily doses of folic acid can help lower homocysteine levels. See my first report below for information about the study. We’ve known for years how important omega-3 fatty acids are when it comes to maintaining good health, and the studies just keep on coming, proving just how valuable omega-3s really are. The most recent case-in-point is a study that was presented at the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology meeting in Florida earlier this month. Scientists found that a mixture of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) helped improve depressive symptoms in study subjects in several clinical trials. Turn to my second report for the details. And, last but not least this week, it appears that vegetarians are at risk of maintaining low creatine levels and supplementing with creatine may boost cognitive function in those vegetarians. According to a new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, vegetarians supplementing with creatine saw an improvement in memory. Read about it in my last report today. As always, I wish you the very best of health.
