Since we're discussing hospitals and doctors I have to tell you what happened to

me yesterday.

It really starts Thursday night. DD really likes herbal tea (peppermint and

such) so occasionally I give her some. I wasn't paying any attention though and

accidentally gave her an herbal blend that had green tea in it -- caffeine. She

was up until 1:30 am because of it. She's fine, but I didn't get much sleep

Thursday night (DD was up at 6, and although DH got up with her, I was still

waking up on and off all night) and I had already been tired.

Friday morning my parents came. I got up late and didn't eat. We went out for

lunch and I had some soup and lemonade. Ate way too much, and the lemonade was

way too sugary/strong (ordinarily I wouldn't have even drunk it but I was really

thirsty and didn't feel like complaining). When we left I felt sort of dizzy

and sick but figured I'd just eaten too much and would feel better after some

time had passed.

20 minutes later the baby was moving in such a way that I could barely breathe.

I got very dizzy and light headed and I believe, actually fainted for a few

minutes, even sitting in the car like I was (thankfully NOT driving). I just

remember feeling weird, then suddenly my eyes were closed and I only half-heard

what was happening, then my mom asking me to turn the radio down (I said no

because I was dizzy), then nothing for a few minutes...then the radio started to

get louder as I woke up and I realized my neck hurt because I was leaning all

the way over to the right. No idea how I'd gotten like that.

I don't have any history of fainting, I'd eaten, and I was already sitting down

so this was weird. We got home, I laid down, drank some water, and we called

the midwives. They asked some questions and then told us it was best to go to

the hospital just to make sure everything was okay. We agreed. (Poor

DD...she'd JUST fallen asleep and was SO tired but we didn't have anyone to

watch her so we had to wake her up and take her.)

They checked me, put me on the monitors (they said " for 15 min. " but never let

me off until it was time to go) and did urine test. Trace amount of sugar. So

then they wanted to do MORE tests -- blood test for anemia, diabetes, and -- GET

THIS -- swine flu.

The doctors actually suggested that I might have swine flu and that's why I

fainted. I had ZERO symptoms of any type of flu at all. And she said " A lot of

people come in here with s- uh, gastro-intestinal disorders lately and it's

REALLY bad, they're VERY sick. " She went on and on about this.

She also said that DD (who was, miraculously, calmly wandering around the room

and playing with the toys we'd brought) would have to go sit in the waiting

room, because they don't allow small children in there. Something about how if

there's an emergency small children get in the way. Umm...not if we're watching

them?? DH took her out for awhile but called the midwives who told him that was

complete crap, then he brought her back in and refused to leave again.

They ran the blood panel and looked at me and then told me to go. The nurse

said it was probably nothing, probably just drinking the lemonade; and another

doctor came in and said it was common in pregnant women who either don't eat, or

eat too much at once (umm...wow, some common sense!). Everything on the blood

panel came back normal except hemoglobin was slightly low. Not a big surprise

but nothing to panic about so they let us go.

Seriously? Swine flu? Making my daughter (who was NOT disruptive plus there

were basically no patients and 30 nurses) leave?

The midwives, after we talked to them today and told them all this, suggested

large amounts of spirulina, water, vit C, and rest, and NO sugar for now.

(Blood glucose a few hours after eating was 99 so no diabetes.)

Anyway, just had to share!
