Measles cases rise as parents snub MMR jab because of autism fears

June 10, 2008

Ayres in Los Angeles

Almost a decade after it was declared officially

eliminated, measles is making a comeback in the United States.

Increasing numbers of uppermiddle-class parents

are opting out of the controversial measles,

mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine because of fears over a link to autism.

Although several studies have shown that no link

exists between the two, parents panicked by the

rumours have exercised their right to prevent

their children being vaccinated. It is thought

that 2 to 3 per cent of American schoolchildren

are under-vaccinated under a non-medical waiver

meaning that their parents are opting out on

principle. As a direct result, there have been 72

confirmed cases of measles in ten states this

year, more than double the rate last year. Seven

more cases were reported in Illinois last week.

US health authorities fear that unless confidence

in the MMR vaccine is restored the disease could

make a devastating return, causing hundreds of

deaths and costing billions of dollars.

“Of the people infected by the measles virus,

only one had documentation of prior vaccination,”

according to America’s Centres for Disease

Control and Prevention. “Many of the cases among

US children occurred in children whose parents

claimed exemption from vaccination due to religious or personal beliefs.”

Before the MMR vaccine was introduced in 1963,

America had hundreds of thousands of measles

cases every year, with 48,000 hospitalisations,

400 to 500 deaths and about 1,000 patients left with disabilities.

An American-style MMR jab was introduced in

Britain in 1988. British health authorities have

also seen a reluctance in parents to vaccinate

their children because of autism fears.Much to

the dismay of pro-vaccine campaigners, both of

America’s presidential nominees have contributed

to the alarm. In January, McCain told the

mother of an autistic son that “there’s strong

evidence that indicates that \ has a lot to do

with a preservative in vaccines”; Barack Obama

said in April that “the science right now is

inconclusive, but we have to research it”.

In 1998 Wakefield published a paper in the

journal The Lancet suggesting that exposure to

the measles virus in vaccines could be a

contributing factor in autism. Others have

speculated that thimerosal a mercury-laced

preservative present in some vaccines could be

responsible for autism diagnoses.

Disease of the past?

4 Days people are contagious before rash shows, and after it disappears

6-20% of measles patients will get an ear infection, diarrhoea or pneumonia

1 in every 1,000 people with measles develops inflammation of the brain

450 measles-associated deaths were reported in

the US each year before the vaccine’s introduction

I find this statement particularly loaded, especially since it is delivered in

quotes.  Its like when Clinton said " I was never alone in the oval office with

ML. "   Cause you can't be alone when you are with someone else....

Of the people infected only one had documentation..

How many of our parents saved our vax records for us to see as adults?  I know

I was vaxed, but I may not have documentation.

loaded and meant to mislead.

Perhaps I am being naive, but was measles really *that* bad? This

says 450 people died of measles each year - did they die of measles

or did they die after seeking medical treatment for measles? Is

this a case of fear-mongering as in chicken pox today?

I know there have been measles outbreaks lately, but has anyone had

any complications? I am sure it would be all over the news if

anyone had been hurt/killed, but then again, I don't really watch

the news anymore!

Does anyone really think they would admit to measles occurring in those who were

vaccinated?

From: http://insidevaccines.com/wordpress/

CDC’s Pink Book measles chapter, shows how infants are now more at risk from

measles outbreaks in post-mass vaccination societies: During the 1989–1991

measles resurgence, incidence rates for infants were more than twice as high as

those in any other age group. The mothers of many infants who developed measles

were young, and their measles immunity was most often due to vaccination rather

than infection with wild virus. As a result, a smaller amount of antibody was

transferred across the placenta to the fetus, compared with antibody transfer

from mothers who had higher antibody titers resulting from wild-virus infection.

The lower quantity of antibody resulted in immunity that waned more rapidly,

making infants susceptible at a younger age than in the past.

NO MEASLES was not that bad - it is ludicrous. My mom (83 yo) was

just talking about that again the other day - she also was a Peds

nurse. She finds it insane that people are afraid of measles.

People who died were people with other health issues, malnutrition or

poor living conditions, for the most part.

There wasn't extensive intervention in those days as there is now,

but it could have been partly due to treatment.

And if they had only used Vitamin A, that would have helped immensely

And of course homeopathy

I agree, I'm puzzled over the fear of both measles AND mumps!

In the comments of the Arthur rally/march article, a person

wrote about how bad mumps is - how all our grandfathers and great-

grandfathers were sterile because of the mumps! Um, well, how the

heck did WE get here??

The idea of the possibility of sterility has the world in a twist, I

guess! What people don't seem to understand is if they would just

allow the mumps during childhood, like it's supposed to happen, there

would be no risk for sterility - even in/after puberty I believe the

risk is minimal to say the least.

So now men AND women are sterile because they eat crap food and

aspartame and they don't can't figure out what's makeing them

sterile!!

Hey, maybe it's the MMR! Why wouldn't the vaccine cause it as well as the

disease itself?

Anyway, I've heard that it's usually a one-sided sterility (although who

actually checked,and how??).

Vit A deficiency is related to measles COMPLICATIONS. The complications are a

damned sight rarer than the vaccine side effects! Ghetto children or children in

extremely deprived circumstances like refugee camps or some Western orphanages,

might get complications. However, apart from a bit of a cold, the Koplic spots

and rash, you probably won't know your kids are sick. My mother could hardly

wait to send us back to school, we were so noisy & boisterous - in rude health,

she called it.

If children do feel a bit under the weather, some nice fresh fruit and/or veg

juices are preferable to eating solid meals.

Here are a few dietary sources of vit A. I'd go for raw milk products rather

than homogenised & pasteurised. Krill oil may be a better option than halibut &

cod liver oils unless you have a supply that is certified free of mercury. Meats

- organically produced, pasture-fed. no vaccines etc etc. We don't use shellfish

at all as they seem to be like Nature's vacuum cleaners.

I give my son cod liver oil every day, along with raw milk, but I

also make him pureed chicken liver once or twice a week. It is a

great source of vitamin A, iron, vitamin C, and some calcium. Just

sautee along with some chopped onions in butter, add sea salt, and

puree...he absolutely loves it and so do I.
