SWIMMING

POOL

Wednesday, 10 August 2011

Did

you know that the inside of your body is like a

swimming pool? That's right, your body is made up of

over 60% water. Oh, there's water in your eyeballs,

your chest, your mouth...you get the picture. That body

of yours is, like I said, a swimming pool!

And everyday as you go about performing all of your

daily tasks, you're using up the water in your body. As

you do, that water has to be replenished. And how do

you go about replenishing it? Well, you do

it by eating solid blocks of milk chocolate. Gotcha!

(LOL. Just wanted to make sure you were paying

attention.)

But seriously, you know the answer. To replenish that

water in your body, you've got to drink water!

If you're a big coffee drinker, I know, a cup of

coffee contains lots of water. But, you can't count

those cups of coffee as part of your daily water

consumption. The same is true for iced tea and soft

drinks. To replace the water you lose, a can of orange

soda is not the answer. You need to turn up a glass of

ice-cold, plain old water and drink up.

Now in case you hadn't noticed, water is big business

these days. How big? Glad you asked. I'm talking

about 6.4 million dollars in annual sales

big! See? I wasn't kidding. Water is big

business! In fact, the profits are so large that lots

of soft drink manufacturers have gotten into the water

business to maximize their own profits.

And

oh, there're all of these really fancy bottled waters on

the market now. You've seen them. They come in those

clear or ocean-blue plastic bottles and the labels are

adorned with heavenly vistas of the Swiss Alps, some

pristine mountain range in California or a glorious

waterfall in Canada. But wait 'til you get a load of

this truth. 49% of bottled waters

sold in the United States comes from municipal

water supplies. Yep my friends, I'm talking

good-old tap water, like that coming out of

your faucets at home.

These companies do purify their water but remember, it

still starts out as tap water. Hey, buying water can be

costly. A dollar here, a buck-twenty-five there and,

before you know it, you've spent a small fortune filling

that swimming pool of a body of yours. When I was in

France, a small bottle of Evian went for

$2.50...American dollars, by the way.

Years ago, I bought a Brita water filter and I've been

in love with it ever since. I still use a Brita filter

to this day. You fill it with tap water and the water

passes through a filter as it fills the pitcher. And I

have to say, I really can taste the difference.

As

you know, I get up very early in the morning. And I

begin my days, everyday, with an 8-ounce glass

of ice-cold water. I keep water at my desk while I'm

working and I like to drink a glass of water when I'm in

the kitchen cooking, too. When I'm teaching class and

really sweatin', that glass of water is right there

because it's more important than ever when I sweat.

You need to be drinking plenty of water, too, especially

during times like these when the country is going

through such a heat wave. When it's really hot and

you're not keeping your body properly hydrated you could

suffer a heat stroke. And with the heat we're

experiencing this summer, a heat stroke could be

life-threatening.

Know what? I have a glass of water right here on my

desk as I write today's message for you. And with it,

I'm making a toast to you all, with a little butter and

jam. LOL.

Don't forget to fill your "swimming pool" today!

Love,
