Rosie,

Any time you have water and dust (water vacuum, AC, humidifier, dehumidifier,

etc.) there is always the likelihood of microorganisms: first bacteria, then

yeast and mold.

Water vacuums are a waste of money. If they really worked, why wouldn't they be

required for asbestos clean-up?? HEPA-vacuums (at far less cost, I might add)

are used instead.

The only dehumidifier I know of that comes with an adequate filter (two-inch

media) is the Therma-Stor.

If you are using any other dehumidifier, you MUST use supplemental filtration

(with a MERV rating of at least 6); otherwise you will have mold and yeast.

The same is true for AC units, particularly portables. Because of inadequate

filtration, more than half the window AC units I sample are full of mold: you

can see the black dots, most often colonies of Cladosporium, behind the supply

grill.

I never had asthma until I started using a portable AC (before I knew better)

that, after four years, was completely lined with the stuff!
