Vaxigrip was given in Israel (made by Sanofi Pasteur)

Fluzone is what is given in the US made by Sanofi Pasteur (Aventis)

There are other vax preparations from other manufacturers - see the end of

this

Sheri

Both are split virus

Both have Triton X-100

Fluzone without antibiotics and latex-free, thimerosal in some preps, no

mention of formaldehyde

Vaxigrip with neomycin, formaldehyde - I don't see thimerosal

2006-2007 version

There is a preservative free pediatric version too (without thimerosal)

DESCRIPTION

Fluzone®, Influenza Virus Vaccine, (Zonal Purified, Subvirion) for

intramuscular use, is a sterile suspension prepared from

influenza viruses propagated in embryonated chicken eggs. The

virus-containing fluids are harvested and inactivated with

formaldehyde. Influenza virus is concentrated and purified in a linear

sucrose density gradient solution using a continuous flow

centrifuge. The virus is then chemically disrupted using a nonionic

surfactant, octoxinol-9, (Triton® X-100 – A registered

trademark of Union Carbide, Co.) producing a “split virus.” The split virus

is then further purified by chemical means and

suspended in sodium phosphate-buffered isotonic sodium chloride solution.

Fluzone vaccine has been standardized according

to USPHS requirements for the 2006–2007 influenza season and is formulated

to contain 45 micrograms (ìg) hemagglutinin (HA)

per 0.5 mL dose, in the recommended ratio of 15 ìg HA each, representative

of the following three prototype strains: A/New

Caledonia/20/99 (H1N1), A/Wisconsin/67/2005 (H3N2) and

B/Malaysia/2506/2004.1 Gelatin 0.05% is added as a stabilizer. Fluzone

vaccine is supplied in four different presentations: a 5 mL vial of vaccine

which contains the preservative thimerosal [(mercury

derivative), (25 ìg mercury/dose)]; a 0.25 mL prefilled syringe (No

Preservative: Pediatric Dose, for 6–35 months of age)

distinguished by a pink syringe plunger rod; a 0.5 mL prefilled syringe (No

Preservative, for 36 months of age and older); and a

single dose vial (No Preservative, for 36 months of age and older). There

is no thimerosal used in the manufacturing process of

the No Preservative unit dose presentations of Fluzone vaccine. Fluzone

vaccine, after shaking syringe/vial well, is essentially

clear and slightly opalescent in color.

ANTIBIOTICS ARE NOT USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF FLUZONE VACCINE.

ALL PRESENTATIONS OF FLUZONE VACCINE ARE LATEX-FREE.

VAXIGRIP - difficulty finding 2006-2007 version

http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/profs/datasheet/v/vaxigripinj.htm

2005-2006 version

A purified, inactivated, split vaccine, each 0.5 mL of which contains

antigens representative of the following types:

A/New Caledonia/20/99 (H1N1)-like strain (A/New Caledonia /20/99 IVR-116)

15 mcg haemagglutinin, A/California/7/2004 (H3N2)-like strain (A/New

York/55/2004 NYMC X-157) 15 mcg haemagglutinin and B/Malaysia/2506/2004

-like strain 15 mcg haemagglutinin, in an aqueous suspension.

The vaccine is prepared from virus grown in the allantoic cavity of

embryonated eggs, inactivated by formaldehyde, purified by zonal

centrifugation, and disrupted by a Triton X-100 process. The vaccine may

contain traces of neomycin.

The type and amount of viral antigens contained in VAXIGRIP® conform to the

current requirements of the Influenza Vaccine Committee of the Commonwealth

Department of Health and New Zealand Communicable Diseases Control Advisory

Committee.

DESCRIBING different types

split-virus or inactivated subunit preparations

The recommended dosage schedule and type of influenza vaccine are

presented in Table 2. Influenza vaccines available in Canada are available

as split-virus or inactivated subunit preparations. Two products

(Vaxigrip®, Fluviral S/F®) are split virus vaccines which are treated with

an organic solvent to remove surface glycoproteins, producing a split-virus

resulting in reduced vaccine reactogenicity. Influvac™ is a surface

antigen, trivalent, inactivated subunit vaccine, which is currently

approved for use among persons > 18 years of age. Each 0.5 mL of vaccine

contains 15 µg of hemagglutinin of each antigen.

[..]

NACI recommends that the trivalent vaccine for the 2006-2007 season in

Canada contain A/New Caledonia/ 20/99 (H1N1)-like, an A/Wisconsin/67/2005

(H3N2)-like and a B/Malaysia/2506/2004-like virus strains. Vaccine

producers may use antigenically equivalent strains because of their growth

properties. The influenza strain A/Hiroshima/52/2005 is antigenically

equivalent to influenza A/Wisconsin/67/2005 virus strain. The vaccine to be

marketed in Canada for the 2006-2007 influenza season contains A/New

Caledonia /20/99 (H1N1), either A/Hiroshima/52/2005 (H3N2) or

A/Wisconsin/67/2005 (H3N2), and B/Malaysia/2506/2004 virus antigens.

Table 2. Recommended influenza vaccine dosage, by age, for the 2006-2007

season

*Previously unvaccinated children < 9 years require two doses of the

split-virus influenza vaccine, with an interval of 4 weeks.

* Previously unvaccinated children < 9 years require two doses of the

split-virus influenza vaccine, with an interval of 4 weeks.

Influenza vaccine should be administered intramuscularly. The deltoid

muscle is the recommended site in adults and children ? 12 months of age.

The anterolateral thigh is the recommended site in infants

< 12 months of age.
