I did a series of 4-6 (was sold as a series) about 25 yrs ago.

I probably had leaky gut since childhood, and the amount of

water through the colon had to be processed also by the kidneys,

which ended up washing magnesium stores and possibly other

minerals out of the kidneys.

I had very painful teeth after that, until I hit on taking a lot

of magnesium for a while, which took away the tooth pain,

but my sense was it never fully restored the kidneys

to their previous condition.

I developed what I can only call weak kidneys or such with

large amounts of water throughput, which I trace to the colonics.

In TCM terms, the colonics aggravated a basic constitutional

tendency of deficient kidney yang. Much of that was rebalanced

in a few years for practical purposes

when I did 2 yrs of TCM acupuncture and herbs.

I feel a colonic here and there, maybe one or 2 per year at the

most, could be suited to the TCM Excess constitution, but

are very contraindicated for the TCM Deficient constitution

with its common low hormone levels, low adrenal, low thyroid,

leaky gut, allergies, inflammatory tendencies, CFS,

never well since mono, etc.

You want to know why I write? This sort of thing is why I write.

So others don't have to go thru needless years of mystery and hell.

I would think so - just be careful what additional ingredients you

put in them.

I don't think putting tea tree oil or coffee in them is safe, even

though Janet does look half her age.

Depends on what you're trying to achieve,

and what side effects you're trying to avoid.

I don't think that most people's colon situation is

as bad as many of the diagrams on websites and books.

If someone has had an intense intestinal flu or done a magnesium

citrate prep for a colonoscopy or barium enema diagnostic test,

they have cleaned out the colon.

Therefore, I don't think most people NEED colonics,

nor do most people need enemas. Many people rave about enemas,

and as they say in homeopathy " better out than in " , but

I find them extreme and unnatural, and don't think most

people need them. Hey you asked :-). They are a substitute

for what? - a high fiber diet, etc, and things moving DOWNWARD

in the normal manner.

If you have leaky gut, you're going to get more water

absorbed thru the colon and back thru the kidneys in a colonic

or an enema than the average person doing the same procedure.

If using a coffee enema, you may get a stimulating coffee

effect all over if you have leaky gut.

There are other ways to clean out and keep things

moving downward in the normal manner. [see my articles*

" On Constipation " , " Homeopathy for Intestine and Gallbladder " ,

" Spring Liver Cleanse (includes info on cleansing herbs

for the TCM deficient constitution) " , and " Juice Recipes " .]

Boutenko's GREEN FOR LIFE book is also a great resource.

I often blend raw collard greens with a homemade juice, some

herbs and protein powder. Eating lots of raw vegetables

especially in warm weather, steamed in cold weather,

is superb for the colon.

I look half my age too, but I never do colonics. Skin color, the

darker the better, prevents sun damage and makes you look younger.

hi Carol

Coffee enemas only fill sigmoid colon if done properly. Would you think

there are chances of absorption there?I must say that coffee enemas helped

me greatly for my toxicity.I have noticed some stimulation effect so I do

them in moderate amounts. Not so often. Sometimes I feel so toxic that it is

much better for me to do them rather than having severe toxicity symptoms.I

also make sure to have some vegetable juice afterwards containing some

potassium rich vegetables.

best wishes.

`The very last part of the colon, before reaching the rectum, is in an " S "

shape and called the sigmoid colon. By the time stool gets to this part of

the colon, most nutrients have been absorbed back into the bloodstream.

Because the stool contains products of putrefaction at this point, there

exists a special circulatory system between the sigmoid colon and the liver.

There is a direct communication of veins called the enterohepatic

circulation. Have you ever felt sick just before having a bowel movement,

when stool material has just moved into the rectum for elimination? As soon

as the material is evacuated, you no longer feel sick. This is due of the

toxic quality of the material and the enterohepatic circulation coming into

play. Because of this, it is important to evacuate when you have the urge.

The rectum should usually be empty. "
