diphtheria jab (which really is DTaP,Polio,HIB - 5 in one) which is to

given at 2 months (not 7 weeks) (there is no single diphtheria jab)

EXCLUSIVE: MMR BABY BLUNDER

Exclusive GP gives seven-week-old boy vaccine by mistake

By Marie Sharp

A TINY baby was given the controversial MMR triple vaccine jab almost a

year before he should have.

The seven-week-old boy was taken to an Edinburgh doctor's surgery for his

diphtheria vaccine.

But instead a GP accidentally gave him the measles, mumps and rubella shot,

which is not usually administered until children are at least 12 months old.

The rare mistake echoes a case in 2002 when an eight-week-old girl was

given the MMR jab by mistake at a health centre in Birmingham.

Whitter suffered no apparent adverse effects from the inoculation -

but an internal inquiry led to a change in the way medicines were handled.

The centre introduced a colourcoding system to mark out the MMR vaccine

from other drugs.

Lothian NHS do not colour-code medicines in their surgeries but they say

the labels are clearly marked.

It is understood that Edinburgh GP lind Wight spotted the mistake

immediately and contacted the drug manufacturers for advice.

The baby is in the care of social services, who informed his parents of the

error. Yesterday, they demanded an inquiry The boy's dad said: " We had not

even decided if we were ever going to let him have this vaccine because of

all the concerns surrounding it.

" Now we are told he has had it a year before he should have. This should

never have happened - his mother and I are worried sick. "

A secret Government report has linked four infant deaths to the MMR jab

over a three-year period.

The Edinburgh incident happened at the Durham Medical Group surgery in

Duddingston on January 31.

The baby's foster parents took him to see Dr Wight for his diphtheria shot.

After he had the jab, she realised it was the wrong one.

The manufacturers told her the vaccine was not likely to have any ill

effects and the baby would not need any additional medication.

The scheduled diphtheria vaccine has been postponed while the baby's

condition is monitored.

And if his family want him to have the protection of the triple MMR shot,

he will have to have another jab when he is the right age.

Dr Wight said: " We have apologised to the foster parents who brought the

child to the surgery for the jab.

" The mistake was recognised straight a way and the manufacturers were

contacted.

" We were told the child's health would not be compromised and that

additional treatment would not be necessary. The foster parents have since

been back to the surgery where the child has been checked and is in good

health. "

A spokesman for Edinburgh City Council's social work department confirmed:

" The baby is healthy and has shown no cause for concern. "

The MMR jab has been steeped in controversy since it was introduced in

1998. Some doctors have linked it to autism and bowel disease, but the

Government insist it is safe.

Infant deaths from measles have dropped to zero since the vaccine was

brought in. But despite that and the Government's claim that there is no

evidence to suggest the jab is dangerous, many parents still refuse to get

their kids inoculated.

Others opt to pay privately for the three vaccines to be given in separate

doses.

Last night, the Edinburgh baby's dad said: " Our son seems fine but this

will prey on ourminds.

" It shouldn't have happened - no parent, whatever the circumstances, should

have to face this kind of concern. "
