PS: He (the doc) also told me to get rid of my stainless steel cookware.

Nickel ?

Hi all,

I am new to this group. CFS for 18 years, FMS later onset.

My question is in reference to a comment made by Katrina, who posted

in reference to the " nickel thing " (see below). I don't know what

that refers to, but I have hair tested for nickel at Doctor's Data

and the bar graph for the nickel went off of the page. I have not

been able to get any MD to explain or further test, let alone treat

this situation. Is there some specific connection between CFS/FMS

and nickel other than the basic depleted glutatione/inability to

detoxify idea?

Since the discussions are so long-standing and extensive, no need to

explain too much to me - - I would be grateful to see a couple of

links. I'm catching up as fast as I can. I have about 2000 emails

in my inbox :)

Thanks a bunch,

Hi , and welcome. I've got high nickel levels too. My doc says it's in part

due to living in the vicinity of a steel works and a coal power station for many

years. He just treats it along with the elevated mercury and copper. I'm

currently using big doses of garlic which my sensitive body seems to be able to

cope with. Of course how effective it is remains to be seen. I know it helps

move mercury out of the brain in conjunction with other chelators. But I'm not

expert.

Hi,

I have a nickel problem too. Nickel DNA adducts and nickel in my

translocator test - I've been doing FIR saunas and my nickel DNA

adducts rose. I was told this may happen temporarily. My blood went

slightly sticky too when I started having FIR saunas every day

instead of twice a week. I've been told my nickel problem may be

causd by a nickel allergy - I may be allergic to the nickel

glutathione conjugates and kicking the nickel off the conjugates.

Apparently you don't need to be ingesting large amounts of nickel to

get nickel built up in your body if you are allergic to it.

Which items of stainless steel cookware did your doc tell you to get

rid of? I'm in the UK and in the process of changing saucepans.

But I don't know if it is necessary to change my kettles as I use

alkaline ionised water and it is boiling acidic stuff that pulls the

nickel out. I have a kettle in my bedroom and one in my lounge so I

don't need to walk everywhere to get water - there is not much of an

alternative to stainless steel kettles unless you have an enamel or

ceramic one that gets warmed by your cooker. I can't tolerate

plastic kettles. The glass ones have stainless steel bases.

Are you avoiding nickel containing foods? Once study says that the

nickel in foods can be higher than nickel you get from saucepans.

I tried garlic too but I overheated and went flu-like and maybe

mobilised a bit too much. I'm taking zinc to help the DNA adducts,

vit C, lipoceutical glutathione. I'm also taking some free form

amino acids (with a little MSM) my holistic dentist suggested. Plus

Humet R. This is in addition to lots of other things I've been

taking for ages like Mag sulphate injections, methylB12, multivit

(containing folic acid), antiborrelial herbs, EFAs. I'm looking

into other things too like PCA-Rx, Sea greens and zeolite too.

Unflortunately I'm allergic to chlorella that my holistic dentist

recommends and cannot tolerate cilantro as it mobilises too much. I

may have to find a nutritionist in the UK who is expert on detoxing

nickel.

Cheers,

Carol

Hi ,

This is what I meant by the " nickel thing " :

There is a heart abnormailty called PFO that was found in a patient of Dr.

Cheney;s. He had a procedure to correct it which included nickel in the repair.

He had a dangerous response which may be from the Nickel.

Dr. Cheney is finding the PFO in several patients, and wanted to warn them about

the correction procedure.

If you search here under PFO Cheney, you will find the original post.

Cast iron works for me.... some of my pieces are in almost daily use for

well over 50 years (hand me downs).

Glassware is fragile, and somewhat hard to deal with. I'm always afraid

I will break it handling it, and or trying to heat something up fast

on a stove eye.

Suggestions?

Cast iron is terrific, especially once it's been well-seasoned.

Enamel-coated cast iron, like Le Creuset, is as good as it gets -- it

heats evenly, it's fairly low-stick, and you don't have to worry

about it rusting, which is an issue with cast iron alone.

The stuff lasts a lifetime, too. Which means that, if you're lucky,

you can sometimes find it in thrift stores and estate sales for a

fraction of what it costs at Wlliams-Sonoma. Le Creuset also has

outlets at a lot of the outlet malls, which is another way of not

having to pay through the nose.

Hi,

I'd agree le creuset is great but it is very heavy. It used to be

possible to get enamel pans which were cheap and lightwight but I

can't find any in the UK.

He suggested enamel or glass, but to tell you the truth I haven't replaced mine.

It was brand new the first time I saw the doctor, and he seemed to think that

older cookware was more likely to cause problems.

They're not around in Australia either, except through elderly relatives and

second hand shops.
