There are several different versions of low/moderate GI diets. They use the glycemic index of a food (how fast it converts to sugar, thus moving through your system) to rank foods. The lower the GI the better the food is for staying with you (not getting hungry so soon after eating).

You still have to eat sensibly (a snickers bar is fairly low GI thanks to the peanuts, and is not a recommended daily item). The low/moderate GI way of eating does keep you from feeling so hungry all the time, I was always hungry before it. Although thanks to too many indulgences of high GI items I have been moving toward more hungry.

SB is a somewhat restrictive low/moderate GI diet. Understanding the GI of food has made SB much more understandable for me. I have tried it before but I think I will do better on it this time with my increased understanding of the GI. At least if I do indulge I can try and indulge in a smart way on the GI. Yes I call cheating indulging. That way it is not totally off limits, but an rare thing to enjoy since it is an indulgence.

Congrat's on your weight loss, that is pretty significant to loose 38 since May.

I hope that being here will help with my accountability. I am on a group on delphi forums that is great, but work banned the site so I can only get on at home and I am not on the PC much at home.

Speaking of work, gotta get back to it. in AK

Hi (one of my fav girl names, next to Elsbeth) I'm Sapphyre, when I started I had 124 pounds to lose, I got on ' Slim Away Every Day program and though I'm not to the letter still following it I'm still counting calories and exercising. I've lost 30 pounds, but I stated in 04. So it's going really slowly. This is a really good group, this is a really supportive group. Lots of good advise and lots of shoulders to lean on. Good luck on your program I know you can do it. I too have lost a lot of weight in the past, I'm hoping this time it stays off for good. I have done so many different things in the last 20 years to loose weight (weight watchers, jenny craig, nutrisysem, fat attack plan, weight loss surgery, low/moderate GI diet). It is really frustrating to never be at a healthy weight, but I am going to give it another try. My last program (still somewhat my current program) was a low/moderate GI diet. I lost about 10 to 12 pounds and many inches on it but not anywhere near what I had hoped to loose. I

suspect it was a bit too lenient a program. There are some others that are much more strict and are probably what I actually need. I am planning to start on the South Beach Diet next week (my budget starts over again) as it is a plan that does follow the low/moderate GI principles and does seem to work. My biggest issue is always breakfast. I am allergic to eggs (I can have them occasionally, but not daily), I am also lactose intolerant and have a thyroid deficiency so soy is out of the running as well. The other issue for me is my sweet tooth (thank goodness for stevia and splenda). Welcome, welcome. I am I have 2 great kids DD4 and DS 2. I live in Anaheim, CA. I have been with the group for a little while now. I count calories, take Hoodia and excercise when I can. I have only lost about 7 pounds that will stay off. I get alomost to 10 then I slip up and gain back a dew more. This is a great group of ladies. You will find lots of encouragement here. Blessed be,

Thanks for the encouragement and the welcome.

IMHO when ever a person manages to keep off weight lost I say it is a success. I keep loosing a little and slowly gaining it back. So congrats on your 30, more will follow.

I will have to do something concrete, as much as I hate to count calories (I really hate to have to track to the nth degree).

When I start next week I am going to keep a food log, as well as weight and measurements. Hopefully progress will be made.

Thanks again

Hi , My name is and I too am starting the South Beach Diet. I just recently went to the doctor and she told me I needed to go on it. The phase 1 part is what is going to be the hardest for me. I will be needing to cook breakfast, and I hate mornings, but you are not supposed to skip meals. Once I get on phase 2 I can start having cereal for breakfast again as long as it is the right cereal. I just went shopping today to buy stuff for my new diet. I haven't totally started it yet, but now I have the stuff. What is going to be hard for me is planning the main meal and finding different ways to cook chicken and beef. I don't like fish that isn't fried, so that is out. I like the fast food places, so trying to eat on phase one and eating out is going to be quite a challenge. I agree with you thank God for splenda. I have never tried stevia before. What's that like? Well, here is a little about me. I am 34 years old and married to a wonderful Christian man. We are both disabled. He has CP and I have a mental disorder. We have been married for 3 years now. Because of all our problems put together we probably won't ever have children. I do love children though, but don't think I could really take care of one 24 hours a day. Last year is September I was told I had diabetes. So I started to lose weight. I had lost 60 pounds since then and gained back about five (I think). Well the other day I went to my doctor and she wanted me to go on the South Beach Diet. She thinks it will do wonders for me I just hope I can stick to it. From what I have read it is really strict. At least the first phase seems to be. I know you can add more stuff back into your diet after you finish your first two weeks. Well, any way, just wanted to introduce myself. Welcome to the group. from MO.

Hi - nice to meet you - sorry I bailed last night before responding to all the mail. I usually only give myself an hour of computer time at night so depending on what all is going on.... I don't get to them all. I am , 39, single mom of 3 boys (10, 12 and 14) - the younger 2 live with their dad... the oldest (and I) just survived his first dance at school - whew! I have released almost 30 lbs in a little over a year - I can't wait to say "35" or "40" LOL - but I will get there...

Amen sister, most of us have tried everything under the sun. You mention WLS - how long ago was that and did you lose following that and then re-gain, or what (if you don't mind my blatantly asking?) One of our gals here had WLS a little bit ago - I am sure she'll fill you in. (( p.s. how is your sister doing , we haven't heard any updates after her latest round of stuff ))

Good luck - I am not looking to try anything like SB with their rules and regs LOL, but can't wait to see how you and do. I think like Sue said the other day - it is basically what we know we should be doing anyway - eating less white flour and sugar, etc.... I am trying to stay away from carb choices in general because I do burn through those quicker.

"How long" is "Phase 1" and "Phase 2"?? I wouldn't start worrying about it and getting all worked up too soon, .... you might be amazed. If phase 1 is similar to curves' phase 1, it only lasts a week - you can do that and not eat out at restaurants for that time.... phase 2 sounds a little more forgiving. But just remember: "you have a choice - do or don't do" like the chinese proverbist says.... need to decide what is important to you and make a way to have this work for you so you can lose some weight and get off the meds....

Hugs,

Thanks for the intro. After reflecting some more and with some talking with other dieting buddies I am going to do the WW (points) but at home. I think it will fit my life better (I need a bit of flexibility, and I remember SB was very strict).

I don't mind questions about my WLS. I had it Oct 1998, lost my 100 that pretty much everyone looses (but I was still about 50 away from a goal weight), then over the last number of years I have gained back about 50 (leaving me with another 100 to loose to be at a healthy weight). I don't regret doing it (probably the main reason I was able to get pregnant with my DD), but I do wish my head had been right with food. I was relying on the limitations of the smaller stomach (Roux-N-Y was what I had), and gradually the stomach stretches back out. I still can't eat as much as I did before WLS, but I can eat alot more than when I was 6 months out from the surgery. I consider having a revision (where they redo it) but I need to get right with food first, and truthfully I remember how much the afterwards part hurt. My surgery was open (from breastbone to belly button), and it took me 3 months to even start feeling energetic.

Congratulations on releasing 30 pounds, I like that concept of releasing the weight (not loosing since lost items can be found again).

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

I won't forget that. I drink alot of tea so I go though tons of water that way (plus that is all I drink at night after work). The body movement is my hard part. I do have a gazelle that I use occasionally (I am just on the edge of the weight that is allowed on it).

Thanks those are good reminders

A co-worker of mine is selling some piece of exercise equipment - I might see if her dh is willing to deliver for a few bucks gas $ :-) We'll see..... we'll see.... I definitely don't need another dust collector around here...

Sorry to hear you regained 50 following WLS - sounds miserably painful, that is for sure. I do agree though about being right with food before doing it again/update....

Hugs,

p.s. good luck with WW then!!
