Senator Lautenberg to NIH: (1) Stop letting organized dentistry control

studies of mercury fillings; (2) Inspector-General needs to investigate

dubious contract re " independent " study of mercury fillings

Hitting the nail on the head, United States Senator Lautenberg

(D-N.J.) has written the Director of the National Institute of Health

calling for an independent investigation of contract procedures of studies

of mercury fillings, and an immediate end to organized dentistry controlling

government research into mercury fillings.

The background:

-- NIH's dental arm, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial

Health (NIDCR) only pretends to study mercury fillings, slopping out

millions of taxpayers' dollars to their friends to do sham studies, such as

the notorious experiment on Portuguese orphans.

-- Joining with the pro-mercury Dental Devices section of FDA, top

officials of NIDCR sabotaged a scientific review of the literature on

mercury fillings by handpicking a tobacco consultant without a competitive

bid, providing a blueprint IN ADVANCE of the desired result, appending an

unqualified strawperson as " contractor " to try to make it look legal,

fraudulentlyf terming the work a " conference " instead of a contract in order

to qualify the strawperson, and assembling a panel with no scientist who had

done research on mercury fillings.

-- To cover up this sham, NIDCR director Lawrence Tabak provided false or

misleading testimony to Congress, specifically, writing Congresswoman

incorrect information about the deal he and his staff made.

-- NIH Director Elias Zerhouni, to his credit, launched an inquiry.

Unfortunately, he chose to conduct it all in-house, making clearing of the

powerful Tabak likely.

Senator Lautenberg challenged NIH Director Elias Zerhouni on three counts:

1) The NIDCR/FDA deal with tobacco consultant LSRO raises " numerous

questions . about its prudence, conformity to scientific principles, and

even legality. " With " the actual and perceived independence of NIH

employees to investigate the decisions of the top officials at one of your

institutes " in question, the case should be sent to the U.S.

Inspector-General for an independent investigation.

2) The track record of NIDCR is an expenditure of a whopping $33 million on

mercury fillings, yet having many studies that are " neither peer-reviewed

nor published. " Worse, " awarding study grants to dentists, rather than

neurologists and toxicologists, appears to have compromised the neutrality

that is so important in such an investigation. "

3) Due to the ADA endorsement of mercury fillings, NIDCR and organized

dentistry have an inherent conflict of interest in determining their health

risks. Thus, mercury amalgam studies should be taken away from NIDCR and

given to the National Institute of Environmental Health Studies.

At last, NIDCR -- this federal bureaucracy whose distorted agenda is to

protect mercury fillings and the ADA, and ignore the health of America'

children -- is under fire!

Do you agree that with Senator Lautenberg that

(1) studies of mercury fillings should no longer be controlled by organized

dentistry's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, but

should be sent to the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences,

which is run by qualified toxicologists?

(2) an investigation by the Inspector-General is needed into contract

procedures of the NIDCR/FDA deal with tobacco consultant LSRO, and the

cover-up by NIDCR's Tabak providing deceptive testimony to Congressman

and Congressman Burton?
