Pfizer to study Celebrex as potential heart aid

Large test of arthritis drug to begin in the next few monthsNEW YORK -

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. will announce plans for a large-scale

clinical trial of the ability of blockbuster drug Celebrex to prevent heart

attacks and strokes in patients with cardiovascular disease, the Wall Street

Journal reported on Monday.

The announcement for the trial comes three weeks after rival Merck & Co.

pulled its rival drug, Vioxx, from the market after finding it was linked to

an increase in heart attack and stroke risk. Vioxx and Celebrex are part of

a class of anti-inflammatory drugs called -2 inhibitors.

On Friday, Pfizer told doctors that Bextra -- its second-generation -2

pill -- was associated with a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes in

two studies of patients after bypass surgery.

According to the Journal, the Celebrex protocol was largely finalized late

this summer, before the withdrawal of Vioxx. Pfizer expects the study will

cost tens of millions of dollars, the report added.

The study is expected to enroll its first patients in the next few months,

and will test Celebrex against a placebo in thousands of people with

osteoarthritis and a history of serious heart disease, such as a previous

heart attack or severe angina, the newspaper said.

Pfizer is said to be confident that Celebrex will pass the test, the Journal

stated, due to preliminary evidence from small clinical tests.

However, if the study finds an increase in heart trouble, the results could

force swift backpedaling on a drug that is on track to achieve $3 billion in

sales this year, the newspaper added.

A message to a Pfizer representative was not immediately returned on Monday.
