Riding on other people's coat tails?

So today on another list vaccinations came up and although I don't

preach on the subject because it is so sensitive and that wasn't the

forum so I merely stated my position, a lady said she didn't get the

whole " no vax " thing and thought that people who didn't vax were

riding on the coat tails of the people who do. She said that people

who vax were responsible for keeping disease away and people who

didn't vax of course wouldn't run into these diseases because everyone

else had been basically doing their humanitarian duty for them and

keeping the cooties at bay. Now that is an arguement I have never

heard of before! Obviously I have all sorts of numbers and figures

burned into my brain as to why I am not going to vax this baby, but

what response would you all have to the " coat tails " theory?!

I have heard that story a number of times, its not true.... I don't have time

now to type out all the stats, perhaps someone has a link, I normally refer to

my book (Neil ) and the graphs as to when the disease started to decline

and when the vax were introduced.

My initial urge would be to point out that she has no idea what she

is saying and that she is just letting words fly right out of her

mouth without having any backup whatsoever. Ask her what she knows

about the histiology of vaccines? Ask her by what numbers the

disease Polio declined before the Polio vaccine was introduced? Ask

her the same for measles, ask her how many people in America get Heb

B every year? Ask her who Jonas Salk is? Who Jenner is? Ask

her what Thermosal is? Ask her what is on the CDC documents

pertaining to the flu? Or how many strains of flu there are?

Just pummel her with questions and when she fumbles around...which

she will.... make it clear that although she does NOT know the

answers, YOU DO, therefore, when a statement leaves your mouth, it is

a well informed and educated statement, rather than an empty flippant

comment with zero educational backup.

There is a difference between a person who thinks for themselves and

person who does not.

I once debated this on another list also. This was a while ago and I

wasn't nearly as informed as I am now, but I knew enough to stand

firm in my decision. It just so happened that a Phd Scientist was on

the list who worked in Pharmeseuticals. Every single time I made a

point, he swung right back at me with all sorts of statistics from

medical journals. I finally got frusterated and asked him to please

speak his mind instead of just blindly coping and pasting what he got

from medical journals that were obviously bias and sponsored by pharm

companies. It was soon thereafter that he refused to discuss the

topic any longer. Funny, because he actually didn't " discuss "

anything, he just kept pasting " studies " from his med journals that

nobody else understood anyway.

I keep wanting to go back to that list today, fully armed with actual

stats that I didn't have before and challenge him again. I don't

though, it's not the proper forum, although I do secretly hope that

someone else brings it up.

Anyway, sorry I'm rambling, just point out to her that she hasn't got

any idea what she is saying, because if she were educated about the

issue, she'd surely be in full agreement with you.

Laurette :)

I ended up giving the her the vaccinetruth.org website if she was

interested in researching it herself (she very well may not be but

maybe someone else on there would, it is a baby email list). She made

some comment about Japan and other countries vaccinate just like we do

so at the point I knew enough to mention about Japan not doing the MMR

shot since the 90's because of autism, the lawsuit in Canada regarding

the MMR shot, and the Netherlands not doing the MMR and only giving

the rubella vax to girls and the mumps vax to boys at 13 if they

hadn't had them as children because of the possibility of

sterilization or birth defects if they contracted them as adults.

You are right though, the uninformed make a lot of assumptions and go

with the herd mentality without becoming educated.
