Women are put off breastfeeding by misconceptions despite much publicised

benefits, a survey has found.

arghhhh!! If the govt would stop letting formula manufacturers advertise,

maybe we'd have better US rates as well. If pediatricians would actually

get SOME training & stop touting formula as " just as good " as nursing, those

rates would most likely increase. If insurance companies would pay for

Lactation Consultants (many don't), maybe more mom's could nurse longer

thereby lowering the cost of the health insurance!

There are so many campaigns to inform people of the dangers of smoking,

but there are no campaigns telling women of the consequences their

children will suffer from not being breastfed: obesity, diabetes,

cancer, not to mention the illnesses they will be susceptible to as

infants.

When I found out breastfeeding would ensure a higher IQ (some research

say up to 11 points higher than average in bf children), I decided I was

not going to deprive my child of this. It is only a one or two year

investment, but it has a lifelong effect on the child's health.

I guess it all boils down to one thing: sick people make the profit

wheels turn, so healthy people are a threat to big business...

How true!! Makes you sick huh?? How disgusting to think that " fixing

people " has become such a big business, that some part of that business

needs to keep making people sick, so the business doesn't stop!!

YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

In the UK, there is legislation in place to prevent formula manufacturers

advertising to mothers, expectant or otherwise. Sadly it only covers first

millks but I suppose that's better than nothing. We have very few lactation

consultants here, but those that do exist are often employed by the National

Health Service to work in hospitals helping new mums. Most of the

breastfeeding support is provided by lay breastfeeding counsellors (this is

how I help out), who do it on a purely voluntary basis. We are getting

increasing numbers of counsellors training all the time and I think it's

making a difference. Numbers are improving...

Love, light and peace,

Sue
