Guest guest
I have severe MCS & am allergic to mold & dust mites etc. But I did get a natural foam rubber mattress & had to air it out for about 6 months, & I also covered it with some cotton mattress covers & it works really well for me. You might want to try a small sample or at least make the time to air it out, but avoid putting it outside in the direct sun as it damages it. But we all have different sensitivities so I am just sharing my experience. Good luck
Guest guest
Latex is a strong allergen. I would avoid it with MCS, unless you know it is not a problem for you. SPAM-LOW: mattress/MCS Hi all, I might need to change my bed soon.I lately heard about visco elastic and latex mattresses. It seems that these types give better support to the vertebra but I am concerned about my MCS. Would you think these might create a problem due to my MCS?Which one is better as far as overall allergies(mites, dust, etc) and MCS is concerned. Standard mattress, visco or latex? Best wishes Thanks Nil
Guest guest
Dr. Rea and many other MCS specialists recommend 100% cotton mattresses, pillows, pillow cases, sheets, dunas. Your bedframe should be made of metal or untreated wood (many woods have toxic chemicals added). I thought " natural " (i.e., real latex from real trees) was supposed to be good for MCS - has anyone heard anything differently?? its pretty pricey in the US, don't know if they're available overseas. Guest guest
Petrochemical latex, or natural rubber latex? Nowadays a lot of people who say " natural latex " are really selling synthetic latex made from petrochemicals. But there are some beds still made from natural rubber latex. I have been looking at a pillow made from that. i don't believe that is a prlbme for many people, do you think it is? Doris ----- Original Message ----- Latex is a strong allergen. Guest guest
Nil Seems to me it would be easy enough to get a small sample of latex and find out for sure if you are allergic. Guest guest
How about a blood test to check for latex allergy? Pretty standard these days. Guest guest
Thank you mrraba,Blake and all. You have given great help. I have taken some great ideas from you. Best wishes Nil Re: mattress/MCS > see
Guest guest
Nice link, but it doesn't even mention latex (natural or petrochemical latex) which is what we were talking about. Guest guest
Blake, Thanks. Good info. Cotton mattresses we have here in Turkey do not have spring system. I need spring system to support my vertebra. Spring systems are not sold separately, either. If I can find a way to solve this problem I will place a relatively thin cotton mattress on top of the spring system and change the mattress often so that mites would not develop.Thinking a way to solve this. Thank you all for support you have given. Best wishes Nil Re: Re: mattress/MCS > Hi Nil, > > The following MCS page mentions these issues: > > http://www.mcsrr.org/resources/articles/S3.html > > Blake > > yildiz wrote: >
Guest guest
Nil, If you had a thin all cotton mattress pad that you could wash & dry with hot water & high heat regularly, you could kill the dust mites & keep them under control
Guest guest
I know this posting is about a month late - but I am very far behind in my list reading. I am somewhat chemically sensitive. I am very sensitive to latex - don't know if it is synthetic or natural latex. Tried one of the " memory foam " matress toppers and it gave me a horrible headache - sent it back. This was to go on a cotton matress, which was abut as comfortable as the floor. Skip the cotton matress - just sleep on the floor and save your money. Michele G > Petrochemical latex, or natural rubber latex? Guest guest
Hi all, here is my current solution to mattress problem. I cut out all the foam and fabric from my mattress.Spring part was fine. Standing there without springs go all over. I covered it with a washable thick cloth and placed washable cotton thick fabrics on it. Seems to be fine at this point. nil Re: mattress/MCS >I know this posting is about a month late - but I am very far behind > in my list reading. > I am somewhat chemically sensitive. Guest guest
I'm way behind on list reading too (as always lately). I have severe MCS and have a natural latex mattress wrapped in organic cotton from Lifekind. It is spring-free, which makes it less conductive of EMFs. Despite the severity of my MCS, I find that 100 percent natural latex is fine for me -- the smell airs out within a couple of months, and it is not that bad to begin with. As others have said, synthetic latex is a nightmare, and many " natural " latex mattresses are only partially natural. I did a lot of research and settled on Lifekind, because they're a small company and very careful about their materials (and used to working with MCS patients), but there are other legit. companies out there -- just buy from someone who sells to MCS patients, not a general dealer, and make absolutely sure you get 100 percent natural latex and can test materials if necessary (put a sample on the pillow next to you while you sleep, to see if you have a reaction). For organic cotton and wool, I've also had a very good experience with Heart of Vermont who make futons and beds (I've used their futons). They will even make one to a custom size and/or shape for a very reasonable price. Peggy
Guest guest
No surprise. Memory foam is made from petrochemicals. Nothing to do with latex. Natural latex or natural rubber is made from a rubber tree. But a few decades ago they started making latex from petrochemicals. Some companies still call that " natural latex " which I suppose could be true if you think of petroleum as natural :-) Because of that confusion, it seems that companies are starting to use " natural rubber " more than " natural latex " when it truly is made from the rubber tree.
