Been there, seen that, done all that. When I flare, I loose hair. My doc

says that is a thyroid function. As I write, I have finally, after five

months this time, stopped loosing hair. I say inositol did it. That's all

that I have done different. If that is something you don't want to try, you

might ask your doc about some T3... if thyroid is the problem, you should be

able to stop loosing hair with this or the inositol.

Just cut my hair really short so I won't have too many months of fuzzys as it

all grows back.

I would definitely have your IGF-1 levels tested if your experiencing hair

loss. People taking HGH or GH stimulators have reported new hair growth and

maybe a depressed HGH level (something many PWC's have) is causing the hair

loss. Just a thought and it's a pretty inexpensive and common test. Steve

I've been experiencing significant hair loss since I've had CFS (almost 4

years). I lose huge clumps every time I wash my hair, plus huge clumps when

I comb it and throughtout the day. My carpet is one big hair ball! I saw a

few dermatologists about it early on in my illness. The first was really

surprised by how much I was losing -- he said it was a " profound " amount.

But each dermatologist said that because of something to do with my hair

follicles, they could tell I had healthy hair underneath growing back. I do

notice tiny hairs growing back sometimes -- and I'm not bald yet, so it must

be true! They called it tellegrum something-or-other and said it happens

when your body is under a physical stress. In my case, I don't know if it's

due to my chronic fevers, hormone changes, nutritional deficiences or immune

system problems.

I also experienced a change in my periods after CFS. My periods used to be

very heavy and last up to 7 days. Now they're very light and last 1-3 days.

I also have chronic yeast infections which drive me completely crazy! The

joys of CFS. ;-)

I too experience drastic hair loss. My dermatologist diagnosed me with

tilligens..whatever also. He prescribed a steriod drop but when I used it ,

i lost more hair. My thyroid has been very difficult to regulate since I

have been sick (about 4 years for me too). This could have something to do

with the hair loss. My hair is all over. I have to apologise when I stay at

relatives homes or a friend. There does not seem to be anything I can do

either. It is very disconcerting. I am going to try HGH injections and

someone posted that ..that should help. I will keep you posted..barbara

Yep, I had approx. a 50% hair loss over the last two years. Have

a low thyroid function along with endocrine problems, including

pituitary, adrenals and full hyterectomy. Have an " integrated

medicine " doctor who seems to be mostly focused on very

gentle slow treatment on the gut and brain. What are the best

thyroid tests to run and what are side effects of inositol?

Last week I got it all whacked off short and had it colored

BRIGHT red. Looks much better than the flat blonde bob. Does

anyone know if any of the lost hair will regrow. Mine started to a

little and I have inch long tufts around the receding hair line that

stopped growing months ago.

Thanks, Uma

I had a some profound hair loss starting about 4 years ago (around time of

onset) that only stopped about 6 months ago. Uma, my hair actually grew

back in places like on my hairline. It was very interesting. I have been

taking thyroid supplementation for awhile (over a year) so I don't know why

all of a sudden there was a change for the better. I am sort of inclined to

" blame " the whey (specifically IPro) but can't make any real connections.

It *is* better with more hair... and I also did the same thing - dyed it

sort of a very bright purplish color from dark brown just bc I couldn't

stand the way it was...

,I think you are right on target in suspecting that the ImmunePro

wasresponsible for the improvement in your hair growth. Hair is madeprimarily

from the alpha keratin proteins. Alpha keratins areparticularly high in the

amino acid cysteine (11.2 mole percent). Guess why whey protein is useful in

building up glutathione. That'sright, it's high in cysteine. I'd say you have

1) Sudden hair loss is a cardinal sign of 's Syndrome (WS), which is

a form of hypothyroidism characterized by a low body temperature (<98.2 or

so). WS cannot be detected by any thyroid blood tests. The only way to

test yourself for it is to take your body temperature with a normal glass,

oral thermometer (not digital).

You take your temp at 3-, 6- and 9-hours after waking and repeat the

measurements for around 5 days straight. If your average daily body

temperature is significantly below 98.6 F, and you have the symptoms of

WS--hair loss, fatigue, headaches/migraines, depression, heat/cold

intolerance, easy sweating, loss of sweating, flushing, hypoglycemia,

unexplained weight gain or inability to lose weight, constipation,

post-prandial sleepiness...--then you have WS. Note that the most common

cause for the onset of WS is childbirth/pregnancy...

If the above scenario applies to you and you're interested in learning more

and/or treating it, contact me. I have WS and I've been treating it for a

few months now, with good results.

2) Another possibility that is based on some hearsay from Dr. Mercola's

website is that drinking mostly distilled water can cause hair loss in

people; and apparently it can happen quite suddenly and dramatically.

best,

Hud

Uma,

Thyroid tests for resistance do not exist, FDA approved. Don't know of any

side effects to inositol. Heard lecithin might be a problem --

undocumented-- if you have gall bladder probems.

My hair's auburn now. I've already gone through the bright red. You might

find that you look like you have more hair if you darken the red a little...

I did. As far as the receding hair. It might return as you get more well...

if no " male pattern " baldness runs in the family.

, to hazard a guess as to why after almost a year on thyroid

supplimentation... you stopped losing and actually gained back hair....

....when you began the drug your thyroid was stressed so much so that you were

almost totally thyroid resistant. As you got better and the stress on your

thyroid was reduced, your body accepted more of the thyroid hormone for usage

--either from the supplement exclusively, or a combination of what your body

makes and the supplement. This allowed the thyroid to again adequately

regain control your hair production. You may even find that soon you will be

lowering your thyroid dosage.

Ruth..right now my thyroid is in hyper mode. It was hypo..and my medication

was adjusted but the dose was too much...I believe this has something but not

all to do with this heavy hair loss I am experiencing. Also, I am in a bad

relapse and bedridden most the time. My nails are peeling and splitting

also. Will inositol help the nails as well? barbara

My hair used to be VERY thick, but not anymore. I have noticed that

a lot comes off in my hands when I wash it. This has been going on

for some time. It still looks OK, but I miss the way it used to be.

It has also become quite fine.

I noticed that when Ken was still early in his recovery, his hair had

become very fine and thinner (not bald - he is one of the lucky guys

that doesn't have to expect pattern baldness), and since his

recovery, his hair is thicker again and not so fine.

Barbara,

I can't say. I thought good nail growth was related to calcium... does

anyone know if it's hormonal instead? Inositol is good for resistant

hormones.

I started taking 600mg once a day and worked up to 1200mg once a day. There

are some on this service that have taken more than that. I haven't. I

started to add another 600mg today, on top of the 1200mg, but I was feeling

so good I wanted to enjoy it. My best experience has been with myo-inositol.

D-chiro-inositol is made in the body by myo-inositol. When I took straight

D-chiro the medium contained too many calories and I did not seem to get the

best benefits, as quickly as I have with the myo.

Good luck. Sorry about your relapse. I don't know what you might expect on

the inositol. You may feel really better, or you may herx because you are

able to absorb more of whatever else you are taking... ie whey, antibiotics,

antivirals.

Barbara,

Nails are also made from keratin, as hair is, and also require quite

a

bit of cysteine. I think the peeling and splitting could very well

be

due to depletion of cysteine, which also produces glutathione

depletion. You might be a good candidate for one of the

nondenatured whey protein supplements.

Ruth - cool. sounds good to me. Thanks for the speculation.

I am in a major doc related work related crash so will be awhile til I get

to lower doses of anything. But I look forward to the day.
