Guest guest
Our family has two children that are/have battled cancer. One child had a rare cancer at the age of 3, she was taken to Sloan Kettering in NY. They may be a good resource to check. My nephew who has been battling a rare tumor on the spine (age 9) is at Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles. Their is also St. Jude. Not sure how all this works, but they could call and find out. Makes my heart break for these little ones. Praying for this child, hope to hear good news that they will find the help they need. We live in Calif. and many of the flights to take the little girl to NY was offered on corporate Jets, they allowed her to fly with them for free on many trips (mother included). Other times, they did fund raisers to help with finances. Julee So Calif. ________________________________ From: notan ostrich <notan_ostrich@...> achalasia Sent: Thu, July 29, 2010 10:36:18 PM Subject: OT: Need special advice  I was asked today to pray for the two year old son of a guy I know through work. Part of the child's blood tested so low that it was declared critical and an as yet unspecified blood cancer suspected. Hopefully tomorrow will bring good news, but if not I want to be able provide support by locating good resources for him. I am sure he is going to have to turn to government programs to get help. Does anyone know of resources where he can find the finer points of using government programs? What about other programs? I know much depends on the state one lives in but some general ideas would be nice. Is there another online support group, like this one, for someone with a child in that kind of condition? Any suggestions on anything related are welcome. Someone once told me to give feet to my prayers. That was my prayer and I gave it fingers. Now I wait for an answer. notan
Guest guest
Notan, Since I am a mom of twin 2 year olds, I happen to know a lot of people with kids. I will try to get some answers for you. I happen to have some on-line connections to Moms with special needs kids. So maybe they will have some resources for me as well. In the meantime, I will keep that little boy in my prayers. Guest guest
Hi Notan, What kind of insurance does this person have? Every state is different, as you said. When you know more, I'll check with my wife because she finds these solutions in her role as a social worker. Of course, when dealing with hospitals, negotiate before proceedures are done. I remember my wife getting a bill for a CAT scan of over $3000 and the hospital accepting $800 from Blue Cross as full payment. Asking for the Medicare rate for proceedures might work. Medical bills are the #1 reason people go bankrupt and the #1 reason people lose their homes. Those bills can be cut to less than a third by a conversation with the hospital first. They are hard to talk to afterward. Never give a hospital a credit card. Make them refuse to treat you because that's probably illegal. Remind your friends of the army motto: " Hope is not a plan. " The more they do before the procedure to arange for payment, the better the odds of maintaining the ability to handle the expenses. Guest guest
Remember Kathie Gaiser's prayer vase? We can add to it. Best wishes for your friend and his family. US NEWS and World Reports runs " best of " schools, hospitals etc. They rank hospitals based on specialities. That is always interesting to look at when you are searching for treatment centers. One hospital may be great in one area, not so great in another. St. Jude's is free to those who need it I believe. At least that is what Marlo says during the pledge drives. Guest guest
Thanks for the replies. The father is a single parent in his early twenties. He has no home to loose. His boy has been sick off and on for some time so he has missed a lot of work and ran up a lot of medical bills already. He lost his car and had to move back in with his mother, not the boy's mother. He is in AZ and has no insurance. notan
Guest guest
What a heart breaking story notan. Since he is in AZ, MD Would be relatively close. It's a great children's hospital for cancer. Maybe he could look into that for starters. I will pass more info on to you as I get it. Cara > > Thanks for the replies. > > The father is a single parent in his early twenties. Guest guest
If he or a family member is available to travel to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis,TN it is a pediatric hospital that treats children regardless of the family's ability to pay. They are considered a top pediatric treatment hospital. www.stjude.org an excerpt from their website: St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With research and patient care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do science more quickly. St. Jude researchers are published and cited more often in high impact publications than any other private pediatric oncology research institution in America. St. Jude is a place where many doctors send some of their sickest patients and toughest cases. A place where cutting-edge research and revolutionary discoveries happen every day. We've built America's second-largest health-care charity so the science never stops. All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay
Guest guest
Oh yeah. Forgot that solution. Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia is another option to explore. & nbsp;Dan -- Sent from my Palm Pre On Jul 30, 2010 12:55 PM, & lt;muthjennifer@... & gt; wrote: & nbsp; If he or a family member is available to travel to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis,TN it is a pediatric hospital that treats children regardless of the family's ability to pay. Guest guest
Notan, I am assuming insurance and money is the issue no matter where he goes. I was in the non-profit field in phoenix for many years and am aware of alot of the social programs in Arizona and unfortuanely many have gone away in the last two years. This is a link to what is left of the state health insurance program for children called azahcccs. http://www.azahcccs.gov/applicants/categories/families.aspx However, he will have to be low income to qualify for free insurance under this program. If his income is too high for this he can still apply and if DES rejects his application for the free azahcccs programs they will forward his application to a program called Kidscare to be placed on a waiting list. Kidcare is not completely free like azahcccs is but I think the premiums are only about $50 a month. Unfortunatley, this last year has been really hard on alot of these programs and KidsCare is part of Arizona's Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIPS) that took a very big hit in Brewers budget last year and I think it has been frozen since Jan. 1st 2010 to new applicants but since the new sales tax went into effect it may be back up and running. I don't know. So if he doesn't qualify for AHCCCS Health Insurance (free insurance) I think they will put him on a waiting list for Kidscare if it is still frozen. Arizona is one of the worst states in the country to be in this kind of situation. There is not alot of help from the state even for very poor children without insurance. There is a single application for both AHCCS and Kidscare and it can be found: http://www.azahcccs.gov/applicants/application/AcuteCare.aspx I am wondering if Phoenix Childrens hospital might have a charity program? I am not aware myself off-hand. Being from Phoenix I know that Phoenix Childrens Hospital is going to be one of the best pediatric care facility in the area. I know they have a respected Medical Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders. http://www.phoenixchildrens.com/medical-specialties/center-for-cancer-blood-diso\ rders/ I am very sorry your co-worker finds himself in such a hard position. Over the years when I was in non-profit field I was witness to the great deficiency there is in Arizona for these type of programs even during good economic times. I hope he is able to qualify to at least get some basic insurance from the state. I can't imagine the stress of having such a sick child without insurance.
