Guest guest
no havent seen that nancy!!! i know what you mean by pricey......... i have spent more money on ashton's little butt in the past two days..... had to order sarah rosenfield-johnsons stuff for home speech program, ot suggested to have a ball pit, well i refuse to pay 70-80 bucks for that blowup thing that the dog would destroy in one chew.....so i went to wally world and bought a kids camp-tent and bought the balls at toyrus on sale for 9.99 and made my own......much more roomier as she is a big girl and if she gets to wild i can put her outside.....lmao she would have shelter.......just kidding, maybe i will be outside in the tent...... so now i have a swimming pool with sand in the basement for sensory, a tire swing hanging in garage, rice in the tub downstairs, and brushes galore,,,,,,,,i am sensoried out.......and i swear if this doesnt work, your gonna find me swinging on the tire swing in the garage......lmao is this book available on line..........good luck at meetings too.......... Guest guest
Leah, This post was so funny. It sounds just like my house! I have giant sized tubs stacked to the ceiling full of sensory things. :-) Not to mention a hanging swing, sand tub, surgical brushes all over, weighted vests, bottles of different scents, " wrapping " blanket and vibrating toys. I must say, since we started bombarding Seth with all this sensory stuff, he has improved a lot! Sure hope you have as good of luck with it as we have. And with the IEP. Guest guest
Leah, Forgot to tell you I love your idea with the ball pit. Seth would bite a hole in one of those cheap blow-up things in a minute. Boy, where there's a will there's a way! Gail
Guest guest
Leah, has a book on Getting the right services for an autistic kids. Have you seen it? His materials are quite pricey. But I ordered it with instructions that I needed it before April 28 when the boys IEP is. & Garry, parents of (9), (8), JJ (6), (5), and Esther (3). All adopted & with Down Syndrome. ---------- >From: okieleah@... >egroups >Subject: Re: Leah >Date: Sat, Apr 15, 2000, 9:14 PM > >YOU GO GIRL!!! Guest guest
Leah, LoL !!!!! scented oils are any kind of scent...garlic...banana..clove.. and we put them in film holders (those little canisters) and we have a smelling party! A wrapping blanket is any material that you literally " roll " the kid up in good and tight and leave them there! Seth loves this and usually falls right to sleep. When Seth wears the weighted vest, we put it on him and keep him active for about 20 minutes. Then we take it off and he is so calm! We can get a lot done in these short spurts of calmness.:-) Seth vest is just cotton material with velcro pockets filled with socks with beans in them. We rubberband the socks closed and stick them in the pockets and velcro shut. This way we can add or subtract the weight as needed very easily. I am having a ball with all this stuff! Trying to come up with stuff is a challenge, but fun! Well, we are off to Syracuse...Hope I can catch up on all the posts when I get home...I'm gonna miss this a lot! Guest guest
Leah, All my stuff is homemade. I buy plastic shoe boxes, with even covers, and cut holes to hold film canisters. I stick the canisters in the holes and put all kinds of stuff in them. I also use the same thing for his " task jobs. " We fill with cotton balls, gummie worms, sand paper and all kids of texture things to push in..take out..even at 2 step things where he has to take to things apart and put in matching holes. I have made some of these for therapists that have asked, and for his teacher who wanted some for kids not in her class. They cost about $2 to make , but to buy from a catalog, they are like $400 for a set of 12 ! Yes, Leah, it does help with Seth's behavior problems. That's why we started it. We had a behavioral therapist come in for a few months, but to no avail. This works good for Seth, but we know that kids are all so different. Guest guest
We used shaving creme in the bathtub. But fingerpaints are great - can be made by mixing flour, water and babyoil with food coloring - again in the bathtub. We also did the Jello stuff in the bathtub, but I HATE the smell of jello, let alone making HUGE amounts of it for the bathtub!!! Just color me GREEN. Guest guest
Leah, We all have fun with the smelling party! LOL Seth survived surgery and is on the mend. He is off the respirator now but I had to insist that he be restrained. He stayed up for 3 days and nights trying to dig his first tooth out, so I can only imagine how bad he will be when he comes to. Hope all goes well with your sensory adventure! I sure miss reading all the posts. I will have much to catch up on next week. Gail

Guest guest
Leah, I'll be thinking of you and hope everything goes well for Cameron with the surgery tomorrow. Staying calm is good!! Maybe keeping busy will help to keep you that way. You have to watch for the let down though. In your case maybe there won't be a letdown with all you have going on. Poor Baby! I'm glad you had such a great weekend. Marisa
