Guest guest
Good to have you here Karla! welcome! [ ] Hi. I just found this group..... I am the mother of 4 children including a 28 month old daughter with developmental delays. She has recently been diagnosed with mild CP, Epilepsy and an Expressive Language Disorder. She has severe Verbal Apraxia amongst other language problems. We started teaching her sign language at 16 months and now sign is her primary means of communication. She is starting to verbalize and the sign helps tremendously. I am very interested in meeting parents of other children who have this and I would love to hear your stories.Karla
Guest guest
Hi JoAnn, I am so glad to hear from you. My daughter has a sign vocab of up to 60 words now. We took some sign classes through our Early Intervention group but mainly we just work with her SLP and she tells us what words (signs) to work on and we get started. I have an ASL dictionary where I look up the words and then we start practicing. I was told to introduce 1 or 2 signs a week and that is what we have been doing. My Daughter can now put some 2 and 3 sign phrases together. Her speaking vocabulary is only about 15 words but she has a lot of aproximations that we can tell what she wants as long as she signs with it. I bought a good video called Talking Hands-Sign Language video at http://www.small-fry.com. It has about 30 of the most common signs on it and it is VERY helpful. I think it cost about $15.00. Good luck. I would love to hear more about your son. Guest guest
thanks Karla for the sites...i will look into them with great enthusiasm...my son Sky is really trying hard to talk and communicate...i am in the process of trying to get more speech for him...and also dealing with insurance hassles...i also started him on pro EFA , well i should say trying to, he doesn't like the taste,...but otherwise i like reading everyone's stories and learning from all of you...do you live in NJ?...does your daughter go to school?...we will be meeting with a child study team in sept. to see if we can place Sky in preschool and i am very anxious about it...just the thought of him going to school and not being able to communicate is of concern to me...i know school would be good for him but i still can't help worrying...anyway, hope to hear from you soon...i too would love to hear more about your daughter...and thanks again for the advice...JoAnn > Hi JoAnn, > I am so glad to hear from you. Guest guest
JoAnn I would really push for Early Intervention to evaluate her and give her therapy! If they say no then you can always appeal! It worth a try! ----- thanks Karla for the sites...I will look into them with great enthusiasm...my son Sky is really trying hard to talk and communicate...I am in the process of trying to get more speech for him...and also dealing with insurance hassles...I also started him on pro EFA , well I should say trying to, he doesn't like the taste,...but otherwise I like reading everyone's stories and learning from all of you...do you live in NJ?...does your daughter go to school?...we will be meeting with a child study team in sept. to see if we can place Sky in preschool and I am very anxious about it...just the thought of him going to school and not being able to communicate is of concern to me...I know school would be good for him but I still can't help worrying...anyway, hope to hear from you soon...I too would love to hear more about your daughter...and thanks again for the advice...JoAnn
Guest guest
Hi Karla, Welcome to the board! I should have told you about this board myself, but I only found it recently also. I think we're on just about all the same boards. This is a busy board with good information. Talk to you soon. Dianne
