Guest guest
Sounds backwards. Usually they do the barium upper GI first to identify the birds beak; then the mamonetry test. I had a nurse do the test, she was pretty good. She explained in detail how it worked. The rediologsit was very good and told me all about A. and what will happen to me in the long run if I did not get treated. Manometry second time around Hi to all, yesterday I completed my second manometry test in two months. I was so scared to have it done again because the first experience was such a bad one. The first test I had was with a male doctor, he was very quick and brutal, I could not stop gagging on the tube. When it was over I vowed never to have to go through that test again. Unfortunately they only suspected achalasia from that manometry test and then sent me for an xray which confirmed achalasia. My doctor then asked me to do the manometry test again at a different hospital with a different person on a higher tech machine. I was scared out of my wits. Anyway I had a lady doctor and she actually let the nasal anaesthetic spray work before she inserted the tube and then asked me to drink water as the tube was going down, I couldnt believe how patient this woman was, I didnt gag at all. Anyhow she told me that there was no doubt that this was achalasia and showed me a coloured graph which showed the water falling through my oesophagus with no muscle contractions etc. I was not surprised by this but am extremely relieved that it was over.. Now back to my gastroenterologist. It's such a long process. I cant wait to have surgery.Sorry for the length of this post but its good to get it out.Biljana
Guest guest
Hi Biljana I am happy to hear that your second manometry was not nearly as bad as the first. I have only ever needed one, and have also vowed never to have another one done. In reality, I know that if I am ever asked to have another, I will do it. There are definitly people out there who can do this test MUCH better than others. Good luck with the rest of your diagnosis/test/appointments! Guest guest
Hi Biljana, I also had my doctor do it and it was a disaster ! He did mine before the Barium X-ray because there was half an hour to spare before they could do the x-ray ! Only after I saw the x-ray I realised why he could not get it right - the tube did not even reach my stomach, but curled round in the large pouch I have. I had to giggle afterwards when the nurse muttered that he was fiddling with his computer again because he thought it was not producing the right results! Guest guest
Glad you had a better time the 2nd time around! My 2nd manometry was FAR worse than the first. The tube was in my nose for over an hour. They did a bunch of tests that weren't done the first time - smelling salts and some stuff the injected in the blood. And then I found out they didn't even need to do it! Anyway, good luck with getting the surgery. mc wagner__________________________________________________
