Guest guest
Would anybody have any idea of what causes achalasia? Could alcohol play a part? I dont drink much but I do enjoy about two drinks a week, and cant help but wonder if that has played a part in giving me achalasia.

I do wonder if mine is related to the auto-immune disease I have, rheumatiod arthritis. I have read a little about that possible connection. As for drinking, I can only respond by sharing my experience..I have never been a drinker. For years I have not even been able to drink socially because of medication that I am on for the RA. So I can honestly say that alcohol has not played any part in my achalasia, unless it was a lack of, LOL Rita
Guest guest
When first diagnosed, I was convinced I got mine from being on SlimFast for an extended period of time. (If I would have known the automatic-achalasia diet was around the corner, I wouldn’t have bothered J) I thought that since I wasn’t “chewing” 3 meals a day, I made my E lazy. My GI and surgeon both reassured me right away that this was in no way possible, as I was still using the E to pass food through to my stomach. But, we all have our thoughts. Other than that, I don’t know how I became so lucky as to get this!! in BC Cause of Achalasia I know a lot of people here have ideas on why they have achalasia. I have a theory which I would like to share. Back in 1986 my husband and I were renting an apartment. The bathroom had a shelf attached to the mirror. I was always rushing to get ready for work in the morning, so I would drink my tea while putting my makeup on. I was putting the tea on the shelf every day, until I realized that I had been spraying my hair spray and some of it could have been falling into the tea. I am sure there are harmful ingredients in there! It was the same year that I was doing this that I was diagnosed. Diane in Chicago
